As others have indicated, your doctor is probably clueless wrt iodine supplementation. He/she would probably try to dissuade you from taking iodine beyond the RDA. Having said this, if you have not been to a doctor in a while I think it is a good idea to have the complete suite of blood tests, including thyroid tests, that most doctors would give adults as part of a major physical exam. Doctors seem to love treating for perceived hypo-/hyper- thyroid conditions based solely on TSH value. But of course the best policy would be to treat based on the patient’s symptoms and the free T3 and free T4 values. My doctor wanted me to get my TSH checked every 3-4 months because he deemed the value to be too high (5.3 - 5.8 range) ... despite other thyroid hormone values being normal and being largely asymptomatic. But now that I am on iodine and knowing it may temporarily spike my TSH I will hold off on further TSH testing for several months. I’m not in the mood for arguing ...

TSH of 75? I wouldn’t hear my doctor scream because I would have already fainted!! I suppose for this reason it is best not to get one’s TSH tested for the first year of iodine therapy unless there are (hypo-/hyper-)thyroid symptoms to contend with. _Lazza   [End]

Although we do know that autoimmune diseases sometimes develop after certain infections (eg, strep) I believe that is a very incomplete picture. Our immune systems are shaped by all the cumulative infections, and related antibodies that are created, in our lives. No, we certainly don’t inherit diseases from our parents. But the susceptibility of developing an autoimmune disease is passed down from parent to child. Now whether a person actually develops the disease largely depends on environmental factors. For example, if my memory serves me correctly I believe that among identical twins there is a 40% chance of the both twins having psoriasis if one twin develops it. Thanks! Wrt boron, is it best to take it anytime or only when not taking heavy doses of iodine (or some other detoxing agent)? Although I am all for blasting out heavy metals from my body I am willing to be patient if it means a less onerous detoxing experience. Hi. I’ve been on iodine for quite some time starting with very low doses (kelp) and I’ve been on 12.5 mg (Iodoral) now for 3 weeks. Going beyond 3 mg/day brought up pretty awful detox symptoms, mostly sinus issues and kidney pain, but salt pushes have made the situation bearable (I’ve been doing okay the past couple of days). In a week I should be able to up my dosage should that be the right thing to do. Problem is: I don’t know if it is the right thing to do!
