Re: Dr. Haskell - Dangers of Too Much Iodine
Perhaps Dr. Haskell is right. I was taking about 16 mg of iodine/iodide 5x per week for several weeks. Of course I also took stuff like selenium, magnesium, vitamin C and did the salt pushes. Early on my body responded favorably (increased libido,
Psoriasis cleared somewhat). But then I just felt overwhelmed with kidney aches, sinus drainage, throat issues and, as I now believe, an irritated (slightly swollen) thyroid. My TSH level skyrocketed. I decided to take 3 weeks off and all my bad symptoms cleared up. I am now taking only about 10 mg over the course of a week, over an 80% decrease from earlier. I seem to be doing well (libido and
Psoriasis still good).
My thoughts:
1) Bodily organs (thyroid, prostate, ..) get saturated with iodine/iodide fairly quickly. I think a total of 200-500 mg of
Iodine in a one month period would make up largely for
Iodine insufficiency in these areas.
2) Breast issue, skin and fat need A LOT more iodine/iodide. I can see where taking megadoses would be needed to help with cystic breast disease. However I definitely think careful monitoring is needed to ensure one doesn't suffer the issues outlined by Dr. Haskell.
Iodine is really VERY potent,
Iodide maybe less so.
Iodine supplementation should NEVER be taken lightly. It's like playing with fire. In the right hands it does wonders, in the wrong hands it's dangerous.
