Side effects from milk thistle happen only rarely, but may include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, rash or other skin reactions, JOINT PAIN, impotence, and anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic reaction that causes throat tightness, shortness of breath, and, possibly, loss of consciousness.) The last two reactions listed are extremely rare.
Milk thistle should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women.

I Started taking a liver supplement (which among other things contained a small amount of Milk Thistle) a few months ago and noticed a very minor discomfort/swelling in the right liver area. After doing some more research on protecting the liver, I decided to stop taking the liver supplement and purchased some Milk Thistle and lecithin. Upon taking that combination, along with Vit C and B complex, I began to have a great discomfort and swelling in the same area. I narrowed it down to the milk thistle that was causing the swelling and stopped taking it. I believe I have gallstones due to ...

what do you think of the ultra thistle and maximum milk thistle formula hve?
i found it to be a very good product.
They are almost identical products, and I think way overpriced. I still prefer powders or even unstandardized products to standardized products. And except for liver regeneration I prefer turmeric to milk thistle. Turmeric is equally as effective in protecting the liver as milk thistle but is a much stronger antioxidant and anti-inflammatory than milk thistle as well.

High doses of milk thistle or IV milk thistle is preferable. Also, alpha lipoic acid will help jumpstart the liver. I cannot emphasize enough how much milk thistle helps. I heard a story about Robert Redford several years ago. Several of his horses had eaten some poison which shut down their livers. They were also given IV milk thistle and all survived except for one.

In a recent post Shelly advised using Planetary formula Bupleurum Liver Cleanse in order to get more for your money, rather than just milk thistle. In looking at the product, each tablet contains only 14 mg milk thistle and suggested dose is 2 tablets twice daily. All other milk thistle products I’ve seen vary, but all have much much more milk thistle in their dosage recommendations.I’m wondering why the Bupleurum product is so low.

HUMAWORM contains Milk Thistle - if a parasite cleanse does not contain Milk Thistle, then a small daily amount would be good. It does not kill parasite, but here is what it does do (copied from the

MILK THISTLE– The component that causes Milk Thistle to help in toxin clearance is silymarin. Milk Thistle aids in toxin clearance by promoting healthy liver cell regeneration and its antioxidant action protects against cell damage from toxins. Nettle leaf also supports the adrenals, liver, thyroid, intestines, nervous system, and helps to control inflammation and allergic responses.

milk thistle and albendazole : space apart?

Hi all,
I am doing ICU’s albendazole protocol. On day 8 today. I am taking milk thistle to support my liver and am wondering if milk thistle needs to be taken hours after albendazole dose so that the two don’t interact. I’ve read that milk thistle removes toxins from the liver, and wonder if taking the two together (without a few hours in between ) would lessen the efficiency of albendazole. Any advice/info/links to relevant research would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much

herbs work best synergistically - several together - as they all have different ”specialties.”
Milk Thistle is famous for getting poisons out of the liver, but the main problem for most people is not just poison but fats. If I were to eat poisoned mushrooms accidentally, then I would definitely just take milk thistle. If I wanted to de-fat and tonify my liver, I’d pick milk thistle third, bupluerum and chinese gentien first and second. :)

Milk thistle is much more than a supplement. It is a proven medication to help repair damage in the liver. However it is not recommended to take milk thistle and flush at the same time. Do the flushes with the help of food supplements such as beets, and certainly apples and apple products. When you have completed the liver flush cleaning series the milk thistle will help repair the liver cells. Doing both together can lead to overload.

If the Milk thistle is causing diarrhea, it may be wise not to increase the dose until you stop having diarrhea. Milk thistle promotes the health of the liver. The liver produces bile, and bile has a laxative action. If there is not some other cause of diarrhea, it should normalize as time goes on.
Apart from that, you could have 1 gram (1000 mg) 3 times a day of Milk Thistle.
You could take even larger doses of Milk thistle, but it would be expensive.

milk thistle and LF are two completely different ways to tune up your liver. Don’t be confused. Liver Flush takes care of physical part- gets rid of liver/gallbladder stones. Milk thistle helps regenerate liver cels, helps to keep up glutathione levels. One cannot substitute the other. Why don’t you do both. And milk thistle is better alcohol preparation: since sylmarin is a fat soluble substance alcohol extract is the best way to ingest it, not pills. Milk thistle helps to protect the liver cells and stimulates growth of new liver cells. It is not generally considered a liver cleanser though. There are other herbs such as burdock root, dandlion root, oregon grape and bhumyamalaki (phyllanthus niruri) that have a more cleansing effect and are great when combined with milk thistle.
