Shortly after I wrote the previous two replies, I read Hv more thoroughly and decided that he seemed more authoritative than Gutsense, so I started following Hv's nutritional recommendations instead of Gutsense. Constipation is what led me to try Gutsense in the first place a few months ago. About a week later I read Hv's critique of Gutsense, so I soon switched from the Gutsense nutrition to Hv's. The slippery elm bark capsules that Hv recommended for constipation kept my bowel movements fairly painfree, but I kept having hard stools. Since they were small stools, they weren't a significant problem. They weren't painful and didn't cause any bleeding. They also didn't leave poop behind on my anus, so maybe that's the natural consistency. But I did always have to strain a little.
Then I ran out of slippery elm caps about a month ago. Then over two weeks ago I got severe constipation. The stools were hard but clumped together and were very difficult to expel. I had to use my finger to dig out the stools. I inserted a suppository and I guess that helped a little, but I still had to dig out the stools until finally all the hard ones were out, then soft stools above them came out easily.
So I got some flax seeds to replace the slipper elm. But yesterday I had about the same problem and it was even a little worse yesterday. There was bleeding both times. So I intend to get slippery elm bark caps again today. My bowel movement this morning was much better, but the stools are still fairly hard, just not as clumped together. I had no food since yesterday, except banana blended with a lot of water. I'm afraid to eat like I normally did.
Two days ago I had some carob powder with a small meal and that seems to be a possible cause of the constipation. I'm not sure though. I read yesterday that constipation is sometimes a symptom of hypothyroidism and I do have some symptoms of that, especially cold hands. When I checked my temperature each morning for a few days about 20 years ago, my average temperature was 97.6 or so, which Hv has said is the lowest normal level. So I guess I don't have it severely. He said hypothyroidism can be due to adrenal exhaustion, so I've been following his nutritional guidelines for the adrenals, which is Amla berries and Rice bran etc. But I need to get more Amla berries today too. I'm a little concerned that the Rice bran may help harden my stools. I'm not sure if it's best for stools to be hard or soft, but it's definitely not good for hard stools to clump together.
