A little Corridor/NAFTA Super HWY update
For my Canadian & other interested friends, here are two bits of info on what's currently happening on the south end of this gig-
1. Mexican trucks will have full access to Interstate 35 starting tomorrow, Sept. 1, 2007.
2. TXDOT (Texas Dept of Transportation) is planning to absolutely bulldoze many little towns just on the east side of I-35 from Austin north to Dallas. These are country folks, farmers, Mom & Pops, cowboys, etc. I've driven this road before and scattered all along this route are homes and businesses with scores of American flags in their yards, signs, and huge billboards saying "no TTC," "no NAU," etc.
These people have formed an alliance including their mayors and local government officials, their school districts, their churches, their farmers' bureaus, their parents, and anybody else they can get. They have contacted everybody there is to contact, from the White House down to the Governor's mansion and below. They've got laywers, and now the local media involved. Public awareness of the issue continues to grow.
The mayors of these little towns are hoppin' mad, saying the TTC is going to turn these towns into ghost towns, and people are starting to move out and relocate already. The plan is to wipe out the existing businesses and homes along the TTC and replace them with new businesses that would serve the commuters using the tollway.
Just one of the troubles is that if your town doesn't have an on/off ramp planned for it, not only will commuters pass by in a hurry, the local folks may have to make an extra 20 to 50 mile trip just to get to the other side of their own land or to their children's schools.
Here ya go, Oh:
