Thanks you all for your suggestions. Whay: I will follow your suggestions on the period of time to use the zapper etc. -once I get it working! Batteries were first to be replaced when testing zapper, but nothing.
Paint Lady I think you hit the nail on the head. At the time my first zapper failed I wondered if touching "hand holds" could have "shorted out the circuit". Never found out but went on to replace the 555 CMOS timer chip. It still didn't work. Did I overheat the timer chip pins when soldering?
I'm sure your right about the capacitor failure: that's probably what happened. Will replace it -and let you know..
