Re: Depends on your blood type, physiology, and bacteria

I think you have wrongly assumed all smelly gas is hydrogen sulfide. As your linked report said - "Hydrogen sulfide is just one of many unpleasant-smelling chemical products that result from bacterial action on solids in the gut." The stinky gas you refer to from eating fruit or starch is probably some other gas.

In the report I linked to, they found very low levels of H2S gas in the stools of subjects who ate no meat for 10 days. So I don't think it is correct to say that lots of foods create significant H2S in the gut. Clearly meat is unique in providing the food for H2S producing bacteria in the bowel.

However you are right to suggest that it depends on the individual. The report states that there was a big variation between individuals with regards H2S production. Presumably this is because some people have more of these nasty H2S producing bacteria. I think it is fair to assume some people can eat a lot of meat and not produce too much H2S.

It is interesting that you have said that blood type is a factor. I am guessing you are refering to the claims made by Peter D'Adamo that people with different blood types should eat different foods. While I have an open mind about this theory, I doubt that it has much to do with H2S production, although it may be a factor in whether someone decides to give vegetarianism a try. Just for the record, I am type A, so according to D'Adamo, I shouldn't eat meat.

In no way am I advising people in this forum to give up meat. I am not even convinced it is the best option for myself. I'm just giving it a try to see if I feel any better. I just presented my research into H2S and meat in case it was of interest to others.
