A great way to get rid of slugs and snails is to use beer traps, its very effective and the critters at least die happy.

Beer traps will attract snails and slugs, so it is a good idea to put them around the perimeter of your garden, rather than in the middle of your plants, and catch them before they start munching on your seedlings :)
