Re: My Side Effects With Mirena- replay about breastfeeding
Hi miss Yvonne, I'm from the same area as you, and also had the mir4ena while breastfeeding my 3rd, so I can tell you that I definitely could tell a difference between nursing with and without the mirena- I'm not sure if you had problems with nursing while on the mirena, but I sure did. Breastfeeding my first two was a breeze, never any pain, ample milk supply, it was so easy that I did for 1 yr for my first, and still did one night feeding for my second untill he was 18 months (not really by my choice...) but, my third was a nightmare. I had the mirea put in at my 6 week appt. and was told it was a great choice because the other forms of hormonal bc would decrease milk supply, and this wouldn't. Breastfeeding was crappy from the second I had it in It always hurt, and the nurses told me that I must have been doing something wrong, wich I doubt seeing as I had done this 2x before, and with this baby for six weeks already. I felt like I didn't make enough milk (she gained weight on schedule, but it just didn't "feel " the same in volume as it did before. Pumping this time was out of the question. I had sharp shooting pains and they thought it could be mastitis, and was on
Antibiotics 3X. I couldn't wait to wean her because of the pain, and it just wasn't enjoyable, it felt like torture. It was sad for me, because she was also my last baby and I felt like I was rushing through this part of her infancy to get it "over with" I couldn't even make it 1 yr, I stopped between 10-11 months. It wan't untill later that I had the mirena removed for other reasons that I realized that the breast pain was not mastitis, (esp scince it didn't go away when I stopped breastfeeding) it was just a side effect from the mirena, that eventually went away a few weeks after the mirena was removed. Through all of this, my daughter is healthy and luckily does not seem to be ffected by the mirena, but I am not convinced that it is a healthy choice for a breastfeeding mom, and think that it should not be reccommended to them. I don't know how the word could be spread on this, esp scince its not written clearly on the PDf for physicians. I hope things go well for your mirena recovery, and keep everyone posted.
