Do you guys really fast for weight loss. VERY BAD IDEA! I have caused myself terrible metabolic and digestive damage through fasting. Yeah, I lost weight, but it was mostly lean body weight. There are simpler, easier, healthier and more effective ways to lose weight and I know them all. Fasting might be ok periodically for short periods of time, especially juice fasting, maybe for a day or two, but you can REALLY do yourself harm. I have.- Re: Fasting???! chava

This is a reply to # 698,936It’s true that metabolically speaking there are more efficient ways to lose weight than by fasting. It’s also true that you have to be very careful when you start eating again, in order not to regain a lot of the weight back.
However, for many people it’s easier for a limited period of time to eat nothing at all than to restrict (in volume and/or in sorts of food) what they eat. I think that certainly for people with a tendency to overeat, who find it impossible to follow a so called "sensible" weight loss program, fasting is an interesting option.
May I ask you what problems fasting has caused for you? I have waterfasted a couple of times for several weeks and this has actually improved my digestion.

This is a reply to # 698,949I am very sorry this has happend to you, but i havent lost any lean muscle. I have been fasting with a personal trainer who checks each week my body fat and lean muscle mass and hmm guess what my body fat is the only thing i am getting rid of and fasting with docotor supervision. Maybe i havent gotten any problems because i have been a very healhty person most of my life and i am young. But it really bothers me when people come on this board and tell people how bad fasting is and how we will al get fat, which is true if you dont break ur fast right and not work out. So far i have only gained 3 lbs back since i broke my fast in september which was for 18 days. I have been eating and juice fasting on and off and plan on a longer Water Fast friday the 18th. Each person is different, so yeah i havent gained weight back like others, i havent had health problems arise from fasting as you did. You cant pin point fasting caused thoes issues. Anyway negativity is the worst thing for people who are trying to lose weight.

This is a reply to # 698,949Fasting ruined my ability to digest food. It took me a long time to be able to digest things again. I think it also contributed to gallstone formation. I think if people who can't control their appetites need to lose weight, a more intelligent way to do it would be Atkins or a diet rich in complex carbs. Fasting really is bad unless it's for a short time. Once I started developing pains, my vision was blurring, it was really really bad

This is a reply to # 698,936so why are you here on this fasting forum????....perhaps something more like Diet Forum would suit you better....i agree long term fasting can hurt you....and yes you get tons back weight if you dont keep a good healthy Diet afterwards...everyone is on board with this....thank you for your input..but still why are you here if this hurt you so much......

if you fast and dont know what you are doing it can be damaging.
you cant just fast and then go back to eating normally.
there is a correct way to fast and if you do that...you will have no problems at all.
how long did you fast?
did you break your fast right?
what was your weight flux?
any pre-existing medical conditiond prior to and post fast?
how did you eat LT after your fast?
if you have useful bad experience info to share...please do.
to make a negative statement about fasting without allocating any details...

This is a reply to # 698,936I wasn't offended by your post, though I can see that some other people were. Personally, I have had very good experiences with fasting, and while I'm fasting other things such as allergies seem to really improve. And I have not gained back any of the weight that I've lost through fasting. But I am curious about your thoughts on weight loss. What has worked for you?

This is a reply to # 698,986Yes, while I'm fasting, many of my health symptoms improve which is why I would do it. But always, when I came back from a fast, I would be in a worse position that I started. Worse tolerance to food, weaker. But I was underweight when I started and now I'm badly underweight. I also have several medical conditions including Hashimotos so maybe I shouldn't generalise. Nevertheless, I won't fast again.
With regard to diets, it is a bit of a mystery as to what is the best. Definitely the best way to eat well is to increase your intake of vegetables and decrease your intake of starchy and refined carbs a lot- Re: Fasting???! chava

This is a reply to # 698,998This probably doesn't belong in the fasting forum but, with your metabolic problems and being underweight, maybe you should give the high fat approach a try? The Homo Optimus diet claims to be beneficial for insulin-related and other auto-immune problems and says that it will make you lose weight if you are overweight, but gain weight if you are underweight.
It is based on the following principles:
- fats are the most metabolically efficient because they are easy to digest and can be used by the cells without much conversion work being needed
- high blood Sugar is not good but a certain amount of carbs is necessary for the body to function efficiently
- eating more protein than necessary burdens your body
This program recommends a daily intake of:
- 1 gram of protein per kilo of your ideal weight
- 2.5-3.5 grams of fat for each gram of protein
- 0.8 grams of carbs for each gram of protein

This is a reply to # 699,016Hmm, interesting diet. But you can't put on lean weight on a high fat, low carb, low protein diet. It's basically ketogenic as I see it. 65g protein and 52g carbs is not a lot of macronutrients! And while your body needs and can use fats, it can't really put on weight with them (except fat weight). Hmmm. It is interesting though. An easy way to eat.

This is a reply to # 699,016Wow. It's a really interesting diet. If it really can help me gain a little weight, I would definitely do it. Very easy on the system. You can see how it would be highly beneficial for those who have blood sugar/insulin problems. Maybe I'll give it a bash. I've done worse things. The bad part is that I really believe that ketogenic dieting is unhealthy long-term...

This is a reply to # 699,036According to Jan Kwasniewski, who developed the Homo Optimus diet, ketosis does not occur if you don’t go under 0.8 gram of carbs per kilo of your (ideal) weight. In fact, as opposed to Atkins, he argues that ketosis, certainly in the long run, is not a good thing, because it puts too much strain on the body.

This is a reply to # 699,059Yeah, I'm against long-term ketosis. The trouble is, as a WOE, it's not a nice diet to sustain long-term. Also, I can't digest all the greasy food he describes in his menus (eggs and butter, fried pork chops - will sit in my stomach for hours!!). But I am trying a higher fat to carbs to protein ratio right now and it does seem to help with some of my symptoms. At least I'm getting more calories than I was.
I must again say though, be careful with fasting. I think if it's for a few days and not too often, fine. I fasted intermittently for a few months and got dangerously underweight and very ill. My vision is still blurred. Just be careful. In fact, the optimus diet is a great way to lose weight if that is your goal.
The trouble with fasting is that you lose lean weight and your metabolism slows. In addition, cortisol and adrenalin go through the roof (which is why you feel so good). These are hormones you do NOT want to be high - at least not for any extended period. Just be careful, and thanks for the advice
