Black Wednesday at the FDA

May 9, 2007, should be cited in the annals of cancer immunotherapy as
Black Wednesday. Within an eight-hour period that day, the FDA succeeded
in killing not one but two safe, promising therapies designed and
developed to act by stimulating a patient's immune system against
cancer. The FDA's hubris will affect the lives and possibly the life
spans of cancer patients from nearly every demographic, from elderly men
with prostate cancer to young children with the rarest of bone cancers.
The dream of stimulating a person's immune system to fight his cancer is
older than the modern era of cancer chemotherapy. Over a hundred years
ago, Dr. William Coley at Memorial Hospital in New York City
experimented with bacterial agents that appeared to have properties in
stimulating immune responses against sarcoma, a cancer of the muscles
and bones. Advances ebbed during the era of chemotherapy in the mid-20th
century, but over the last 25 years cancer immunotherapy has received
much research focus and periodic support from the biotechnology
industry.
Progress and investment, however, have been unsteady as tumor shrinkages
following treatment never quite translated into "hard," clinically
relevant outcomes such as prolongation of the survival of the patient.
Still, this type of approach remains the Holy Grail of cancer treatment.
One day current treatment approaches such as surgery, radiation and
chemotherapy, which often kill most but not all of a cancer, could be
made obsolete by a potent immune response that eradicates the cancer
cells and provides subsequent protection against return and relapse.
Thus it was remarkable that in the last several months two different
biotech companies, with products utilizing two completely different
cancer immune approaches, came before the FDA's Advisory Committee
Meeting for judgment. The first product, Provenge, made by the Dendreon
company, is a cellular therapy that tackles prostate cancer. The results
of the Provenge clinical trial in men with prostate cancer who had
failed all other therapies appeared before the committee that advises on
cell-based cancer products for the FDA Center for Biologics. This
committee was comprised of immunology and oncology experts. The second
product, Junovan, made by the IDM company, was tested in children with
osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer that affects just 900 children per
year. The results of the Junovan clinical trial appeared before a
different committee -- one that judges protein cancer agents and was
comprised solely of oncologists with no immunology experts.
Both the Provenge and Junovan clinical trials provided evidence that
patients lived longer compared to control groups. But according to the
FDA, these "survival advantages" that statisticians talk about had
"issues." When the issues were discussed in the Provenge public meeting
the majority of the committee (in a 13-4 vote) thought the issues, while
relevant and important, were superseded by the solid immunology science
behind the product.
However, those voting in the minority, very powerful members of the
oncology community, launched an unprecedented PR campaign accusing those
in the majority of incompetence and naiveté in matters relating to
cancer products. The arrogance of this campaign overlooked the notion
that survival data from immune-based products may be qualitatively
different from, and may need to be judged by different criteria than,
survival data from chemotherapy drugs.
But such intriguing academic discussions never had a chance to take
root. Instead -- just a few weeks after the favorable ruling on Provenge
-- the Junovan product came before the FDA's Advisory Committee for
approval. Incredibly, the improvement in the survival rate of children
with bone cancer who received Junovan was summarily dismissed as
irrelevant by the committee. Why? The statistical data showing the odds
of efficacy were 94% surety instead of the usual goal of 95% surety.
This 1% difference was all the committee needed to justify a 12-2 "No"
vote.
The Junovan meeting was chaired by the very physician who launched the
PR campaign against Provenge. Unlike the meeting on Provenge, however,
all discussion time on Junovan was spent kneeling before the altar of
statistics -- not a single comment was made about the immunology science
supporting the efficacy of Junovan. Remarkably, as the Junovan vote was
taking place, the FDA folded under the pressure and announced that it
would not abide by the favorable vote on Provenge. Instead, the FDA
called for more testing that -- if the product is not killed outright by
its maker Dendreon -- will take at least three years to complete.
In the span of eight hours, the dawn of a new era in cancer
immunotherapy was driven back into the night. It will be years before we
know the full impact of these decisions and how many cancer patients,
young and old, have had their lives cut short as a result. For now,
however, one thing is clear: While our lawmakers obsess over FDA "safety
reforms," no one is holding this government agency accountable for its
complicity in stalling therapies for life- threatening diseases.
Dr. Thornton, a former medical officer in the FDA Office of Oncology
Products, volunteers as president of the Sarcoma Foundation of America.

Once again, we see the FDA acting to protect those whose real interests it serves. Those new treatments obviously had the potential to step on some well heeled toes! No wonder Dr. Thornton is no longer with the FDA. What an enlightened view:

As long as mainstream western medicine continues to cut, poison and burn and treat only the symptoms (tumors and cancer cells) of underlying health problem with the immune system and likely toxic contaminations, there will never be anything close to a cure. All such treatments do is remove some or all of the "signs" of the problem, while weakening major organs and the immune system and paving the way for an even more vigorous return of the cancer or the introduction of another cancer or serious illness.
Those of us who advocate natural alternatives that are safer, more effective and less expensive (and thus unlikely to ever be sanctioned as approved competition to the multi-billion dollar cancer industry) have long preached that the best way to ward off and beat cancer and illness is to build and maintain a strong immune system. Changes in diet and lifestyle, along with removal of toxins and effective supplementation with proven anti-cancer and immune boosting natural supplements have saved countless lives that would have been lost if mainstream drugs and treatments had been the only alternative.
Sadly, the number of lives saved by what nature has amply provided is a tiny fraction of what could be saved if only we had not been brainwashed for generations that only approved drugs and treatments devised by man were real medicine and the things nature provided were quackery and tomfoolery.
Exactly when did Nature become a quack?

The FDA'a actions to block nutritional and alternative therapies are UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Read the 9th amendment. These are rights and freedoms that were available to our forefaters and therefore may not be taken away even if not specifically mentioned as a constitutional amendment.

This is a reply to # 872,406Tomorrow I move to Utopia to research and write a major book project. I will also be serving as a consultant, helper and newsletter contributor to my lifelong friend's company Utopia Silver , which markets a superior colloidal silver product as well as other supplements, minerals and health items.
Today he is in Austin working with a court appointed arbitrator to try to settle a years old dispute with the FDA. Among the FDA demands: take off every reference to diseases and conditions (Arthritis, Hepatitis-C, Cancer, etc.), change "boosts" the immune system to "enhances" huh???), remove all testimonials which speak of an illness, disease or medical condition, etc.
The end result will be that he will lose a very significant portion of his business, because he will lose rankings that have cost years of effort and hundreds of thousands of dollars to achieve at the major search engines - where he gets 60% of his traffic from. (For example, someone will do a search for "arthritis remedies" but his newly titled page of "Bone and Joint Disorders" will not show up in the search, whereas his old one titled "Arthritis" would have).
Banning testimonials? So much for freedom of speech! It appears to be about as valid as freedom to choose our own health products and treatments when it comes to the virtually untouchable pharmaceutical and medical industries. As if it isn't enough that they already had a legal monopoly on the words "cure" and "treatment" which can ONLY be used by "qualified medical professionals" and the purveyors of "FDA approved medications".
As almost everyone involved with alternative health knows, colloidal silver is a wonderful, wonderful supplement whose effectiveness for cancer, hep-C, arthritis, immune boosting and numerous other conditions has long been demonstrated and the medicinal use of silver dates back centuries. As Dr. Rath once observed, "if it works, if it is cheap and if it cannot be patented" you won't see it in our marketplace!
I urge all of you to take a look at my friend's site and support him - I have the highest regard for him and for colloidal silver. His company is one of only three health product companies that I endorse and am affiliated with. If anyone would like to know the others, send me a private message. Except for rare exceptions, I do not advertise my affiliate programs or even my own books here in this forum.
I posed a question earlier, asking "Since when did Nature become a quack"?
One of my forum members had the answer: When it cut into the profits of the companies the FDA protects.

It really is a sad day when lies are presented as truth and when the law of medicine is based on the benefit to the patient but the bottom line. If you look at what medications or what I refer to as synthesized poo-poo pills, they are strictly pallative in nature. They do nothing to treat the underlying biological, chemical, or electrical causative factors to disease of which the body is fully capable of healing (AMAZINGLY SO in many cases) And BY GOD, to have a governmental agency (More like Medical Nazi's IMO) to say "Hey wait, you cant be making all these claims because they are drug-like in nature and that falls under our jurisdiction" Give me a FRIGGING BREAK! Nature holds an abundance of powerful and natural cures to many of mankinds ills but until people realize this and get away from the magical "cure-all" Pop a Pill Mentality.
Folks its simple really, its a matter of consistently healthy living in all aspects which include emotional, nutritional, and energy/spirutal work that will get you what you desire which is optimal and abundant health. Guess what, that takes work, which for many is reason enough to stick with the latter to their health concerns since taking personal responsiabilty for their health is just too great a burden.
And as far as quacks go, the medical system is largely quack based. How so? It almost consistenly never treats the problem(s) of which their are many and only fixates on the symptoms which when treated with the standard methods results in more symptoms from the treatment itself. Talk about a vicous never ending cycle!!!

This is a reply to # 872,473You're overgeneralizing a tad bit. There's various modalities of medicine: allopathic, osteopathic, naturopathic, etc.
As far as treating symptoms instead of problems, you're overgeneralizing a bit again.
It's true that medicine has a lot to do in all respects with treating symptoms, because after all, that's why people seek help for their problems. But it's not all pop a tylenol and it hides your headache without fixing it.
i.e.
Heart attacks - fix the blockage in the coronary arteries with stents, clotbusters
Stab wound - look for damage to structures, fix the damage
Syphilis - give antibiotics in one shot and cure a terrible disease
Back pain - manipulative therapy to loosen joints, relax muscles and tissues
Type I Diabetes - your body doesn't make insulin, so you get insulin injections
Pap smears - greatly reduced the rates of undiagnosed and deadly cervical cancer before symptoms start
Pregnancy - back in the day people went to a doctor to confirm being pregnant and then to deliver, then nurses got savvy and realized that consistent pre-birth care reduced problems so they started doing home visits
Itching - witch hazel causes vessels to constrict, decreasing the inflammation

Stents have been proven to not last and are being discontinued in countries with the best health care such as Germany.
Stab wound - look for damage to structures, fix the damage Trauma care is about the only place where modern American health practices are worthwhile.
Syphilis - Use a zapper, Beck protocol and Rife for faster initial results, colloidal silver will effectively stop the spread. Antibiotics as only a last resort.
Back pain - manipulative therapy to loosen joints, relax muscles and tissues. Thank God that the chiropractors beat the AMA in their class action lawsuit.
Type I Diabetes - proper nutritional and supplemental care can help restore insulin production in many but not all cases.
Pregnancy - Yes ! nurses got savvy and realized that consistent pre-birth care reduced problems so they started doing home visits. Doctors are still rarely as savy as nurses.
Itching - witch hazel (a natural herbal extract) causes vessels to constrict, decreasing the inflammation.
Aspirin is the safest and best NSAID. It is proven to reduce the risk of heart attacks, reduces the risk of cancer, and does not cause unnecessary liver and kidney damage.

Of course, you are quite right. I was speaking in general terms. And, in general, the western approach to medicine is to treat the body as a collection of parts and to treat only the part where the symptoms manifest themselves - which usually means treating the symptoms and not addressing the underlying causes. That is not to say that sometimes such an approach works, nor is it to say that there are not preventative practices in modern medicine. It is just to say that all too often the approach does not work, that underlying causes are all too often ignored and that the role proper nutrition, diet, exercise, removal and avoidance of toxins, and safer, more effective and less expensive natural alternatives are ignored and suppressed.
In the instance of stab wounds and back pain, that is where modern western medicine excels - fixing broken parts and physical trauma. It is their approach to treating disease and illness that falls short because it is still looking mostly at treating parts and symptoms and not at the body as a synergistic whole.

This is a reply to # 873,741Which is one of the flaws against the Modern Medicinal mindset as it currently stands.
One example would be lets say you come into the docs office with hypertension. The doc might ask you some questions about diet etc... but what in most likelihood will happen is you will get a scrip for Hypertension drugs which do nothing for the actual cause of the hypertension which in this theoretical example could be from possible long term chronic underhydration-dehydration, lack of essential vitamin-mineral defincencies (e.g. magnesium, etc..), excessive stress, diet high in processed foods, etc. The simple solution would be to address the given factor that is causing the problem and VOILA the Hypertension should by all means go down like magic provided the factor or factors causing the problem were addressed properly.- To cure or to profit, that is the qu... This is a reply to # 873,833But then there would be less need for repeat doctor visits since the underlying cause would be corrected and not continue to manifest itself as a treatment. AND, there would be no prescribed medications which would leave the underlying imbalances untreated and likely have side effects that led to more doctors visits for more tests and exams in labs that the doctor often has part ownership in, adjustments or changes in the original medications, and new medications to treat the side effects . . . . which would have their own sides effects and combine with the other medication to produce even more side effects, requiring still more doctor visits, more tests, and still more medications . . . .
As Jon Barron has noted, by the time the average male reaches 65 in the United States, he takes an average of 15 prescribed and over the counter medications daily - and it all started out with one or two conditions that could have been remedied naturally.
One model is good for profits and the other is good for humanity. There are short term exceptions, but in the long run, curing and profits are mutually exclusive. We get the profit model.

This is a reply to # 873,833When a person comes in with hypertension for the first time, do you know what the first step in treatment is? The first step is checking it again after dietary and lifestyle changes and dietary changes: quitting smoking, eating healthier, destressing. If the blood pressure is still high after several months, a workup to rule out other causes of hypertension like kidney problems is done and THEN a trial of medication is started. It's not a vending machine, at least not for hypertension.
Far be it to always blame the patient, but oftentimes people are reluctant to change their lifestyles and settle for drugs. If someone is told that they have high cholesterol and high blood pressure and that they are at higher risk for stroke, heart attack, kidney damage, etc. and that they need to quit smoking, drink less alcohol, eat less fried chicken, and they try and fail, whether or not they REALLY tried or not, it's not unreasonable to use medication. Maybe they did everything right but they still have high blood pressure. Maybe they tried halfass knowing that the end result of their non changing their lifestyle was serious illness and death. Is there anyone in this country who does not know the dangers of smoking? Is there anyone who thinks fast food 5 times a week is healthy for you? There are MANY problems with the status of healthcare in this country, and the medical system is responsible sure, but it's irresponsible to assume that people are totally innocent in the decline of their own health.- Re: My response Tony Isaacs

This is a reply to # 874,184I have never assumed that the patient is innocent and often preach that the lack of proper nutrition and diet, exercise and lifestyle choices are huge contributors to the health problems many of us face.
Once again, I am not condemning every single medical practice. I would daresay that patients are more often guilty of contributing to their problems than not. However, they are even more often victims of the practices of mainstream medicine which by and large treats the body as a collection of parts. When it comes to treating broken parts, this approach excels, when it comes to treating illness and disease too often the symptoms are treated and the underlying causes are not addressed.
Let me be very clear - I think that by and large our doctors are hard working and conscientious individuals and I do not blame them for the shortcomings in mainstream medicine nearly so much as I blame the system that has taught them a one sided approach and withheld vital information about the role of nature and nutrition.
Drugs and medicine are multi-trillion dollar industries who guard their turf fiercely, and all too often profit has been the driving force at the expense of loss of life and suffering. I do not blame the doctors who lack the knowledge and training that could naturally save lives and ease suffering, I blame those who withheld and suppressed the information.
No, I am not here to run down doctors or scientists. Or for that matter, even the rank and file in the FDA and AMA and other agencies and institutions - they too have been taught, conditioned and controlled that what they are doing is right.
Instead, I am here to shout from the rooftops: LOOK AT WHAT NATURE HAS GIVEN US!
YOU MAY NOT HAVE TO DIE NEEDLESSLY OR LIVE PAINFULLY! THERE COULD BE BETTER WAYS!

Many cancers are viral in nature and colloidal silver is well known as an antiviral and antibacterial. Silver has been known for it antibiotic powers since bacteria were first discovered.
While no one can affors to provide the expensive multimillion dollar tests that the FDA requires, there is plenty of scientific evidence that colloidal silver works against HPV (which causes Cervical Cancer), HIV (which is related to several cancers), and other viri.
The pharmaceutical industry tries extensively to negate this evidence by claiming that it in not FDA approved. That, however, does not mean that the evidence is not real or valid.

This is a reply to # 872,990I have never stated that colloidal silver cures cancer, although there are many testimonials to be found to that effect. I have said that it is "very effective" against cancer and that is true. As Para_Zapper so aptly pointed out, colloidal silver is an extremely effective anti-viral. It has been found to destroy over 500 different pathogens.
While you will find negative studies and propaganda about colloidal silver from mainstream medicine and their lackeys, such as Quackwatch and the FDA, much as is true about just about any natural, safe and effective alternative to the World Pharma empire, there are a number of studies dating back to one done by a fellow named Searle attesting to the safety and effectiveness of CS. In 1999, the FDA put CS on their hit list, and, not surprisingly, we have seen studies and articles since then that either criticize the effectiveness or safety or both of CS - an oft repeated pattern when alternatives threaten patented medications.
As a counter, I offer these comments from the Director of the Life Sciences Division at John Hopkins University:
"We recently completed an extensive review of the scientific literature on the safety of silver, especially as it relates to its one known potential side effect, namely, Argyria. Argyia is an irreversible discoloration of the pigment (skin) caused by excessive silver intake or chronic exposure to silver by certain tissues. The amount of silver required to develop Argyria is estimated to be 3.8 grams per day."
"By comparison standard 10 ppm colloidal silver contains silver in amounts equaling less than 1 milligram of silver (1,000 micrograms = 1 milligram; 1,000 milligrams - 1 gram), which therefore represents an amount approximately 1/500th to 1/1000th of the amount of silver considered to be a risk in the development of Argyria. Most cases of Argyria reported in the medical literature over the last 100 years involved chronic intravenous or intramuscular use of the silver preparations, most often involving a silver drug prescribed by physicians which in most cases contained silver nitrate."
"Other cases of Argyria reported in the medical literature involve application of silver preparations used for many months or years in the treatment of the eye or vagina for certain diseases. We could not locate a single case of orally consumed colloidal silver manufactured in the last 25 years causing Argyria in our review of the literature. This is probably due to the low levels of silver contained in such preparations, since only very small amounts of silver are needed for its antiseptic effect."
"Humans consume approximately 100 micrograms of silver every day in the diet. Additional amounts within this range would be considered safe by all reasonable estimates, especially if the amount needed to develop Argyria would be equivalent of 380,000 micrograms (or 3.8 grams) of silver a day. As for the efficacy of silver preparations, we found considerable scientific evidence published over the last 75 years that a number of silver compounds can be effective germicidal (antiseptic) agents against several hundred pathogenic organisms."

Klebsiella oxytoca (Similar to those infections caused by K. pneumoniae) inhibited and killed at a concentration of 2.5 ppm. 6/7/99 BYU Report.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa (severe burn and wound infections, keratitis, pneumonia, meningitis, nosocomial infections, urinary tract infections, etc.) inhibited @ 2.5 ppm and killed @ 5 ppm. 1/22/99 BYU Report.
Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumonia, meningitis, sinusitis, otitis media (ear infection) inhibited @ 2.5 ppm and killed @ 5 ppm. 4/21/99 BYU Report.

And, as to why I consider my friend's colloidal silver product superior, I guess that in part that comes from having known him since the second grade (about the time dirt was invented!) and being naturally prejudiced because I know his honesty and integrity as well as the care and effort he puts into anything he does. In part it also comes from the fact that he is the inventor of the best method of producing CS (one known by only two companies), and also in part because I now live only a short walk away from his lab and can observe first hand the quality of the equipment and raw materials and how meticulous the manufacturing process is.
