Hi, I'm not sure what to do right now. Our beautiful lab Loki died on 12/9 - turns out someone gave him "just a little" antifreeze! We don't know who & probably never will. Anyway, we have another dog Kodiak (an alaskan husky) who has been so depressed since he died - the reason we got Loki in the first place was as a companion for Kodiak, he really is a pack dog & needs a pal. So we finally broke down on Christmas eve & got a wonderful stray lab from the pound. He was fine for the first couple days, but last night he started throwing up little bits (small pancake size). I'm super paranoid because I have a neighbor who constantly complained about Loki's whining & now he's laying into us about Astro (the new dog) after only 2 days. He only seems to throw up when he's excited around humans, though. He hasn't done it outside yet as far as we can tell. He has an appointment at our vet tomorrow morning, but I'm wondering if I should take him into the vet hospital right now. He's still eating and evacuating. Money isnt really a factor, because if he were a child we would do what was necessary, but we did just spend $3,000 on Loki less than 2 weeks ago, so money is a little tight right at the moment. I'm just wondering if it could be the stress of a changed environment, new food, an actual home (he was at the pound a while)? Any suggestions?

If he is eating, drinking and defecating then it's probably not an emergency. Hopefully your Vet can find the cause tomorrow.

This is a reply to # 74,007Yeah, I wish we could. It's been 4 years now & he (our neighbor) just likes to complain about everything. We thought it was just us, but when we got to know some of our other neighbors we found out he is like this to everyone - we are just the lucky folks who get to live right next to him! He often blames any dog barking on our dogs (there are at least 7 other dogs in the houses immediately surrounding ours) - even when they are in the house & they never bark in the house!He & his wife have threatened to move because of us (because our dogs tore up the lawn in OUR backyard & such nonsense), so we're just waiting...

dogs from shelters do go through an adjustment period of a month to three months. Sometimes the vomiting is due to shots, change in food, stress, or all of the above!
Are you feeding him a high-quality kibble such as Innova or Wellness? The worst mistake anyone can do is to feed a dog pet food from a grocery food. Real food, table scraps even, is SO much better.
He needs very simple food right now. Cook up some chickena nd break it up for him, and cook up some quaker oatmeal - no milk, but go ahead and dress it up with butter, olive oil and even some brown sugar. Dogs like things that taste good just as much as we do. Plus he'll be a bit dehydrated and needs foods that are wet, not dry. Kibble is exactly like eating raw pasta. Blech!
You can also find doggie pepto-bismal at the pet stores and even health food stores. I'd do that before taking him to a vet. I'm not an alarmist and don't take mine to the vet unless there are other symptoms or the vomiting persists for more than 3 days after change in food.Advertisement

what exactly is so bad about standard dry dog food? I fed my previous dog the brand ProPet (Carnation owned). She never once complained about it, and 2.25 cups kept her right at 74 lbs for the better part of 10 years. If I needed for her to gain weight (e.g. for winter), then I increased it to 2.5 cups. If I wanted her to lose weight it was decreased to 2 cups. Until she got Lymphoma, people would guess my 10 yr old puppy as being 2-4 years in age. Such was her vigor and energy level.
Currently I have a 8 month, and 3 month puppies thriving on the same brand puppy formulation (32% protein/18% fat). The 3 month old mostly Black Lab is growing like a weed on it. The 8 month old (Pyrenees?/Lab/?) runs like a deer, and bounces off the wall with her energy. Yes I anticipate in a few months their days of free choice will come to a close, and I'll have to dip down from the puppy formula to the performance formula (30% protein/15% fat). But for now table scraps are something they get as a bite or two at the end of my meal, rather than a meal un to itself.
Although you bring out several good points as to what might cause GI upsets such as change of food, I perfer the alarmist approach when it comes to vomiting. An obstructed bowel can become gangrene in 3 days.- the truth about pet food shelleycat

I have found the web site of my favorite puppy food. When I have time I'll attempt to raise the issues of the one article to them, and see how they are able or not able to defend their product. An example question might be:
"Your product lists chicken meal as the first ingredient. Please define 'meal', and what parts of the chicken it may contain? What steps are taken to ensure the quality of the meal?"
The answers given might be interesting.

This is a reply to # 74,013I had had may dog on kibble for 6 years before I met BARF feeding. And it seems to me that poison from that food is still coming out. Toxins acumulate and you never know when they will become deadly for your dog.

neighbor threatens to move, volunteer that you believe the neighborhood might be willing to take up a collection to help them move out. If they complain about your yard, suggest they put up a picket fence.
So your dogs get blamed for all the others barking? Been there! Once upon a time I had a neighbor who was blaming my puppy dog for the barks. I came one Sunday morning to find an anonymous note on my mailbox urging me to keep my dog inside at night. She had slept about 5 ft away from my bed the previous night like usual. I sort of let it be known around the neighborhood that such constant notes might be thought of as harassment. The notes stopped. Sometimes it's best to confront the problem.
