Hello all,
I just received in my mail today some cold pressed olive oil and
Sea Salt . However, it looks like my
Sea Salt is iodized... is this a bad thing?
The information of the product is as follows:
What is
Sea Salt ?
Sea Salt is salt that is obtained from the evaporation of ocean or sea water.
How is it different from common
table salt ?
Common salt, because of the refining process, removes many of the nutrients that are found in simple sea salt. Common salt is usually either refined to produce sodium chloride or potassium chloride crystals, then
Iodine is added back into it to prevent
Iodine depletion in the body. Hence the name, "iodized salt".
What is in sea salt that I am not getting in my common
table salt ?
During the refining process to produce your common
table salt , the trace minerals found in the sea are removed. These minerals are then often sold to the chemical industry or to companies which produce nutritional supplements. Sea salt contains all the precious trace minerals our bodies require such as sulphur, magnesium, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, and copper to make enzymes, amino acids, proteins and participate in other chemical cycles of the body.
If it is not refined, am I getting sand and bacteria in sea salt?
Sea salts are refined, but not by the processes used in the common table salt industry. Kalas, the largest producer of sea salt in Greece, uses the re-crystallization method of refining which is done under vacuum conditions. It guarantees absolute purity to the consumer and uses natural means to rid the salt of residues from the salt-works and of microorganisms.
Is it stronger tasting than common table salt?
The taste is similar, however, after using sea salt you may not like common salt as much. Because the taste is slightly stronger, you don't need to use a much in cooking.
I purchased it from
