I want to present a friend with some scriptural insight into parents' requirements to educate their children. Please refer to any you can recall here, in response, please.
I was listneing to George Gordon tonight about Home Schooling. He had a great book from a candidate for Secretary of Education who was not aproved by the Senate over a century ago. That was a great examination of the social ills in the North, as opposed to the South, in the US, on children and an examination of the 2 different systems. I need some scriptural references however. I know home schooling does not have the rape, robbery, extortion, bombings, murder, and etc., etc. that government schools have.
I pointed out to him that just in the last few weeks as I thought about this as I tried to recall how many 'periods' our school day had in high school. As I recall, it was 7 periods. Since we had 6 minutes travel time in a high school with 2000 enrolled, we therefore had 54 minutes class time. If class size is 27, then each student recieves LESS THAN 2 minutes personal instruction per day per class, or less than 14 minutes each day in personal instruction. This formula does not allow any common instuctional time. If a teacher must say "now class settle down", she is taking someones instruction time!
If each class has a combination of personal instruction, common instruction, and time for each student to direct themselves, then each area can recieve at most 18 minutes, or less than 45 secodns of individual instruction for each child. Lastly, as we start to examine time alone, we come to understand that each child is actually relied upon to become educated on their own initiative, and merely instructed to direct the childs' initiative in learning.
Leaving aside the dangers in schools, the instruction time must, necessarily be better when the parents do it. Curiculum, then becomes the one indeterminate. Given the lack of basic reading skills exhibited by the masses, I fail to see how anyone can conclude they are not able to teach their own children. Even the schools do not allow the teacher to set the curriculum, but rather, the teacher is required to follow the book and materials provided, and to augment that in some small way.
I want, however, to know more about Gods' directive regarding educating our children. It is late at night, and I am just rambling.

Homeschooling is great for some and for others not. I know very godly children raised in homeschooled setting and very godly children raised in the public school enviornment. Personally I would not try to push either one. Perhaps it would be best to make sure the options are known with much grace and mercy and then allow the Holy Spirit to move.
We homeschooled our son. His education and attention span are way beyond average. Still...if he could do it over again he says he would like to be in school by high school. If I could do it over again I think I would choose a Christian high school for him. It is one of those hindsight things..ugg.

This is a reply to # 406,684I am just assisting my friend to try to explain it in scriptural terms. He is in the mission field, and the children are not going to be subjected to the Communist government they have, so his wife home schools. He just needs some scriptural communicatins because no Americans allow there children to be government schooled, and, as is typical of the 3rd world, it is just seen as an Americna peculiarity.
As to your foundation, I do insist on home schooling, and not only that, on dropping out, for teenagers. I have been sucessful in motivating that. It is an important issue to understand, for the safety and education of the child. Please be advised the list I issued earlier is from comparative studies on problems in government schools from 50 years ago and today.
I do not believe that a cavalier subjecting of a child to danger by the parent is excuseable for any reason. The real threats to children in government schools are both physical and spiritual. I forgot to include the incidences of suicide and insanity in the government schools.
Please get your children out if you have failed to as yet. Even if you are single, you can get more than 14 minutes a day to direct your childs' education. Doing so means that your child recieves more education at home in 14 minutes in the evening than he or she would in any government school, unless the teachers give your child more than average attention, and why would they? Would it be fair to the other child in that classroom who is shorted because your child gets that attention? No. So, be kind the the other children, and allow them more time with a teacher by removing yours from government schools.
As to your childs' desire to attend a government high school. I hope that he is not that stupid. No, I don't mean as an emotive pejorative, I mean qualitative. If your child at 13 in a home school is not testing above 12 years in government schools, I submit something is materialy wrong in the schooling.
I recall an account of a man in Missouri who likes to set civil rights test cases, especially pertaining to religious free exercise. He recounts recieving a demand his 12 year old daughter be produced for testing, and knowing his way around courtrooms, decided this is going to be another fine opportunity, so he took her to see what their demands would be. After testing the 12 year old the response was simple. 'Sir, the child tested at 12.4 years of education, and we only provide 12 in the system, so you don't need to produce her for testing ever again.' Drats!!! She did too well! No suing the rich school board, to retain parental rights! Likewise, I believe your child would have tested above minimum graduation standards had he tried to attend.
The scripture that I recall most is the more generic, 'Raise up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from that.', or thereabouts. Seems to me to be Proverbs.

The Lord called me into home schooling back in 1985 and I have never looked back. January marks the 21st anniversary of that time. I'd be happy to share my testimony about that, but what you asked for is scripture.
Deuteronomy 6 is a good start. 1)Now these are the commandments... which the Lord your God commanded to teach YOU, that YE might do them.... 2)That THOU mightest fear the Lord thy God, to KEEP all his statutes..., which I COMMAND THEE, THOU, and THY SON, and THY SON'S SON, [it's a command, not an option] all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged [see, there's a promise attached to this command]. 3) Hear, O Israel, and observe to DO IT; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily [promise is restated and another one added]... 4)Hear, O Israel, The Lord our God is one Lord [we will worship only one God, and not all the bazillion false gods out there]: 5)And thou shalt LOVE the LORD THY GOD with all thine HEART, and with all thy SOUL, and with all thy MIGHT [everything we've got].6) And these words [the commandments and statutes from the Lord]... shall be in thine heart 7)And THOU SHALT TEACH THEM DILIGENTLY UPON THY CHILDREN, and shalt TALK OF THEM when thou SITTEST IN THINE HOUSE, and when thou WALKEST BY THE WAY [we sometimes say "driveth in your car"], and when thou LIEST DOWN [bedtime] and when thou RISETH UP [in the morning].
The scripture goes on to say that you should write the scriptures down and post them around the house and at the door and even wear them as a bracelet or as a headpiece. The idea was to keep them constantly before you and to teach them constantly to your children.
The question to answer with this passage is, how can you teach the scriptures to your children if nobody's home? Also notice, that God commanded the Hebrew parents to teach their own children.
There is an argument that Hebrew parents did send their boys off to Hebrew school at the synagogue for a few hours a day to be taught by the rabbis if they were wealthy enough. But the spiritual instruction came from the home on a daily and constant basis.
Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth [don't stop talking about it or memorizing it]; but thou shalt meditate [think about them and mull them over] therein day and night [constantly], that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous [another promise], and then thou shalt have good success [want success? There you go.]
Psalm 1
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly[why would you subject your children to the counsel of the ungodly?], nor standeth in the way of sinners [what kind of children are in public schools? Do you want your children to be around these sinners for 7-8 hours a day, 5 days a week?], nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful [some teachers and curricula are so anti-Christian as to scorn the religion. Do you want to subject your children to that?]
But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season [your children will bring forth fruit in time, and you get to see what it was you've been sowing all this time]; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper [there's that promise again].
The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away [so why would you send your children to their schools?].
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgement [on the Day of Judgement], nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous [Christ's righteousness, not our works].
For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous [thank you, Lord]: but the way of the ungodly shall perish [do you want your children to perish?]

Thank you very much. I enjoyed reading your response, and shall reread and email it to my friend in South Africa.
I especially like the Psalms 1 reference you made, and the perspective.
In addition to my true intent of learning from others the scriptural directives to educate children, I also wanted to see how much people actually knew about what they are doing with homeschooling.
I began to wonder when my sister allowed her son to go to high school from home schooling on the flimsy pretext of athletic extracurricular participation. I know she has legal knowledge, and has support groups. She must have known about the ability to join in athletics, plays, and other extracurricular activities. I never would have allowed him to go to school, but would have allowed him to join the teams, and then participated with him and them, so I may be very aware of what was occuring all around him.

Many mothers do a fabulous job of teaching their children up to the 8th grade, and then put them in high school in the public schools. I know personally of several students who did fantastically there, as in valedictorian, etc, but just as many who got lost and swallowed up in high school. I don't know what makes one succeed there and another fail.
Homeschooling in high school is difficult. I'm doing it for the fourth time right now. You can get dvds now where basically you pay for a tutor, and you buy the textbooks and testing materials to go with it. There are other options and creative ways of doing it, too. I have personally chosen to do it the old fashioned way. It has worked well for me in the past. The three children who have graduated from my program have done exceptionally well in college and beyond.
I do not say that homeschooling is for everyone. It takes a calling and conviction from the Lord, and He will supply everything that you need to do the task He has called you to do. It is not for the faint of heart, and it is certainly not for the lazy. One needs an incredible amount of determination and faith. But if the Lord has called a person to homeschool, she should not make light of the task God gave her and flippantly hand her children over to strangers.

Police Say Captured Pennsylvania Teen Cooperating
Girl With Suspect Not Questioned Because She's A Minor

BELLEVILLE, Ind. -- A Pennsylvania teenager suspected of killing his girlfriend's parents in an argument over her curfew was captured in Indiana on Monday with the girl in his car after a high-speed police chase that ended in a crash. The 14-year-old girl was not hurt, authorities said.
David Ludwig, 18, and Kara Beth Borden were taken into custody around midday after he crashed his parents' car head-on into a tree in Belleville, some 600 miles from where the killings took place.
Police were questioning Ludwig but said they could not question Borden without an adult present because of her age. Investigators said it was not immediately clear whether the girl was abducted or went along willingly, but they were operating on the assumption she was kidnapped.

yes, this country approves of the slow burning fire we pass our kids through in public schools. i have seen what they are creating and it isnt a pretty picture.
i am surprised more isnt being made of this story. frankly, i think the public schools are too burdened and underfunded now to be pointing fingers at others. this is a real tragedy with these two young people and now two people are dead. we may never know the real story.

2)You signed them up for Social Security.
3)They were produced in a State sanctioned marriage.
Any or all are prima facia evidence of the child being the states' property, and the parents merely having an equitable interest.
For those out there with home schooled children, may I suggest your rescind their numbers now, before they are adults, and that the child also rescind within 30 days of turning 18. If they don't know their number, never teach it to them.
Each of the 3 above is against Gods' will, and redeemable, if you get out of that part you have done, now.

Back in 1981, when my first son was born, I had a homebirth with midwives. I started attending births myself and learned of this underground movement called homeschooling. In 1980, the state of Texas had declared homeschooling illegal, so people were were actually living "under the radar" to avoid sending their children to public schools, getting them vaccinated, etc. Some of these people were in my church. They weren't kooks at all. They were very educated professional white collar people who believed the Lord had given them a scriptural mandate to teach their own children. They were willing to commit acts of civil disobedience and even risk jail time in order to do as the Lord commanded.
In 1985, my husband and I had to decide what to do about kindergarten. We prayed like crazy, and decided to teach our son preschool at home. We knew we had until age 7 to obey the state compulsory attendance law (it's 6 now), and technically we could have waited until he was 7 before putting him into kindergarten, but that didn't seem right to us.
There was only one bookstore in Houston that carried any books about home education. I had heard of a couple of book titles and knew I needed those books. I drove to that Baptist bookstore with my 41/2 year old and 2 year old boys, praying all the way, and wore sunglasses so no one would recognize me. I was afraid I'd be arrested for thinking about homeschooling and if anyone saw me buy books about homeschooling they would take my children away from me. I was scared to death but somehow I managed to buy the books. The clerk saw which books they were, double wrapped them in brown paper bags, and when he took my check, very quietly whispered to me "Good luck. I'll be praying for you." I ran out of there and prayed the police wouldn't follow me. I got home, locked the door, pulled down the window shades, and cried. God was calling me.
We went to church a couple of weeks later. After church, our son asked if he could do an activity with our "homeschool stuff." A man approached us in the parking lot. "Excuse me, but did your son just say something about homeschooling? Do you homeschool?" I froze. This is it. He's going to take my boys away from me. My husband said "it's only preschool." The man said "There's about 20 families in the church who are homeschooling underground. Why don't you join us for hamburgers after church next week?"
From there we were invited to a conference, held that summer in our church, of all places. The place was packed with about 800 people from all over the state. We had no idea there were so many people homeschooling!LOL it's in the millions now. The speaker was awesome, showing us the very scriptures I shared above. He said "who are you going to serve? Who is going to be your master? Are you going to sacrifice your children to the god of the Philistines or are you going to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord?" He talked about fathers being the head of the household and being accountable for the souls of their children. We prayed an anointed prayer that night, dedicating our children to the Lord and dedicating our lives to the high calling God had given us to educate our children whom the Lord had blessed us with. We repented of our wicked ways, on our knees, at the altar or at our seats. I don't think there was a dry eye in the place. I knew that if I placed these children in the public school system that they would be corrupted- absolutely useless to the Lord.
The next day we heard from an attorney who later became the most trusted legal authority for home education in the world. He said "parents, you had better make sure God has called you into this. It is illegal to homeschool in Texas. You had better be sure you are homeschooling out of conviction and not just preference or convenience, because religious conviction is the only leg you have to stand on in court." A father stood up and shouted "it's the only leg worth standing on!" and the other fathers shouted "Amen!"
So that's how we got started. In 1986 there was a big rally in Austin to make homeschooling legal and there were 5000 people there. In 1987 there was a class action law suit, and a legal battle that dragged on until 1994. When my oldest son turned 7 we moved to Louisiana so we could homeschool legally. We came back to Texas in 1994, homeschooling ever since. Three have graduated, four are still at home.

Is the best as well as only leg to stand on. Use it for everything...no SSN number...no taxes....no vaccine....no licenses.
If you will rely on religious free exercise, you take back your rights, and eliminate your priviledges. Priviledges are benfits, and thus require you to get permission of those who grant them. Rights are natural, and originate with God.

No one should enter into such a lifestyle (under the radar) without really knowing what they are doing. The parents should find a really good religious freedom lawyer who could take your case to the supremme court of your state, if necessary. You need to know the law. Memorize the code or statute that gives you the legal right to do what you are doing. Scriptures don't stand up in court.
Be careful, too, of who you talk to about doing something like that. Most people don't understand, especially the grandparents or the ex-spouse. Make sure that your children are well-behaved in public and well groomed all the time with cute outfits, clean cut haircuts for the boys and bows in the hair of the girls. Never spank your child or yank on them or swear at them in public. Find a sympathetic doctor who has a staff of sympathetic nurses for when your boy bumps his head and needs stitches. Make sure that you are above reproach in every way possible, yourself. And make sure you explain to your children why you are doing what you are doing, or they will rebel against you when they become teens. This is a reply to # 406,761it should scare the heck out of anyone to consider bringing a child into this world. i see unlimitless opportunity, however, in being godly foster parents. to help a child cast away by this world would certainly please our father. and a person could do it right under their noses!

It's not the schools causing the problems, it is the "churches". They have departed from teaching "The Full Counsel of God" and make priorities out of programs and gifts, and what little is taught from God's Word it is always "smooth words" There is no message of The Cross anymore. Everything is about cleaning up the flesh "in Jesus' Name". Christian television is all about eating from the good side of the tree, and most radio programs also. We have to get back to "The Cross and The Finished Work of Christ". This is a good reason to homeschool, kids will not learn about Christ in schools. dp9 posted some excellent Scriptures on the parents responsibility to teach their children. Where else will they find out Who Christ is, what He has done, what His present ministry is, who they are in Christ and how to see things with a Divine Viewpoint instead of a humanistic/socialistic viewpoint from the pit of hell. They tell children "there's a little good in everybody" but The Word of God says "there is none good no not one". If they hear the former through 12 years of school, plus Collage and hear the latter at home, their soul's will be in such a state of confusion they will eventually seek medication. Believers should be begging their Pastors to lift up Christ instead of all the works programs that passes as "Chrisianity". Truth is the only combat against humanistic and Satanic philosophy, and they can't be mixed. This is a reply to # 406,753I agree with both of you.
First, it doesn't take a village to raise up a child (global communism, ie communitarianism), it takes a Mom and Dad. It's our job to teach the kids on a daily basis, as scripture commands. Even if we don't teach them multiplication tables, we need to teach them who Christ is and why we believe in Him. And not only do we believe in Him and then go our merry way in life, we live a sacrificial life like He did and commanded us to do- "follow Me."
Second, we need to be inteceding for our pastors who have been called by God to lead the flocks but they themselves have been led astray. They need to have their fire rekindled and burning like a bonfire. Each father needs to grab a burning branch from that pastor's fire and light the bonfire in his own home. You get bonfires going all over the city, and then you have some light in that city! A city set on a hill cannot be hid! The fathers take their well-made arrows, straight, and strong, and proven, light the tips in the bonfire, and shoot them out to start new fires. The more arrows he has the better! The mothers are at home making new arrows, working and training, making them straighter and stronger and sharper every day.
Without vision the people perish! We need a multigenerational vision. We need to train our children in the way they should go so when they are old they won't depart from it.
