How to beat the heat without relying on air-con

On Monday we talked about keeping our houses cool so we didn’t have to turn on the air-conditioning so often.
When we do turn it on, it’s recommended to keep it at about 24 degrees so we’re not using extra power to turn our houses into fridges. But Australia is just a very hot place, so we’re going to have to come up with alternatives if we are going to try to reduce our reliance on air-con.
Here’s a few suggestions:
* Ceiling fans and pedestal fans help cool you down by moving the air around. If you have one, you can use it instead of air-conditioning, as it’s less power-hungry. Try putting a bowl of iced water in front of a pedestal fan to give it an extra chill.
* Another pedestal fan trick is to use it to get rid of hot air trapped inside your house. The air is pulled from the back of the fan to the front, so if you need to vent in a hurry, point it towards an open window.
* Keep a little spray bottle filled with water in the fridge, and use it on yourself to cool down when you get home, or before you go to sleep.
* Eat a curry or something with a lot of chillies! They make you sweat, which cools you down. It’s worked for people in India and South-East Asia for centuries. Also make sure you’re drinking plenty of water to keep hydrated.
* Sleep in the backyard, if there’s a breeze. We loved doing this when we were kids - sleeping bags on the lawn, stars above.
* Take a cool or lukewarm bath or shower: very relaxing after a long day.

Hi Spud,
Today we are having a blistering hot day from where I'm from, and your post comes in very handy.
I was thinking about ways to cool down and that's when I thought about an interesting and very useful item that will keep you cool through the hot months of the year.
When I played Tennis, alot of the ladies had worn this neck band type thing around their neck to keep cool. They would soak them in water and away they went. They would be useful for any activity or for just simply keeping cool within your own home.
I did a search and found, 'Cooling Neck Ties', which is just one of several 'cooling apparel', the following website has made available for sale.

There are things like cooling caps, vests etc and items for children as well. Great ways to be relieved from the heat of summer.

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,747,570What a fantastic idea, we've had a 40C day today as well, and one of these would have been very handy.
I wonder if you could make one yourself, by recycling old clothing, and filling it with the water crystals.
I think I'll have a go at making one, I might see if I can also make a cooling jacket for my dogs, they suffer badly in the heat, and a cooling jacket would be perfect.

Hi Spud,
It's amazing when you read something and then ideas and thoughts come into mind. That's pretty hot, 40 degrees, thats what we had today as well. We also had high winds but thankfully it is raining and I am absolutely estatic about it.
Making yourself one is a great idea including cooling jackets for your dogs. The water crystals is a great idea and the great thing is because they retain water, you wouldn't have to resoak them very often at all.
Your idea of cooling for your dogs, brought me to the thought of further ways of how to keep birds cool when the heat is dangerously high, especially for indoor birds where houses retain heat and the birds are at high risk of heat stroke.
One thing I thought, that as birds, such as my parrot and budgie, whom have no feathers covering their bottom half of their legs and their feet, you could make like a water perch type thing, where they would recieve relief through their feet and cool down.
It could be like a clinder with a round door at one end, and just simply fill it up with cold water. It could come in all different sizes in regards to length and width and just refill it when it gets warm. I am going see if I can make something like this for them myself, as well.
I have chickens as well, and I have had the sprinklers on for them through the hottest part of the day, they just loved it. They got through well and I hosed down their house, to take all risk away of possible heat stroke. I recently got three more chickens and they are all doing really well and have settled in. I had a peek about 15 mins ago and they are all in bed, taking shelter from the rain.
My parrot and budgie are singing now, the window is open and the beautiful cool breeze and the scent of rain is flowing through my house.

This is a reply to # 1,747,657A cooling perch for birds, what a great idea, like dogs, birds can't sweat, so they are at high risk on days with extreme heat, something we are seeing more and more of.
In my area, it is not unusual, at least in the last few years, to have many days in the summer, above 38-40C, and I know its the same where you live.
It seems these extreme days are going to continue, so its important to make sure that we, and our animals, can find relief from the heat, that doesn't add to the pollution of our planet.
Please post a photo of your bird perch, when you have made it:)

I can only wish this was any concern of mine. At the moment, I'm thinking of a little veranda fireplace, so I can sit out in the sun, where it's sheltered form the wind. Or, there is the practise of Tumo (pronounced Doomo) Pretty amazing stuff.
There must be a way one can do the reverse. (cool)

MMM, I don't see why the same technique couldn't be applied to cooling the body. I've seen the Buddhist Monks in India use this technique.
I have used a similar technique to lower my heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Its also a good technique for centring and calming. This technique has a lot of potential for healing as well.
I'm glad your able to get out into the sun, this is soooo important in the winter time.
