Every forum owner can decide if "Edit Message" will be allowed or not.
"Edit Message" is always allowed on messages that nobody replied to.
But, if a forum owner decides that "Edit Message" should not be allowed, then the button will disappear on messages that have replies.
Why?
There are 2 way to abuse "Edit".
In debates, "fake angel" is a common abuse:
you flame someone, call him a m*o*r*o*n or such and you provoke him/her into "counter attack".
Then later you edit your own message and it appears you have been attacked for no apparent reason. You are an angel.
Another form of "Edit" abuse is spam.
A smart and patient spammer joins discussions, and posts normal messages into many different forums.
14 or 30 days later, the same person returns to all of his/her messages and edits content, including advertisements and links to his website.
Messages, being old, are under the moderators radar, but Google can pick them up and backlinks to his/her website can improve his/her site rating.
We will have to decide by voting if "Edit disable" is something that should be used or not.

Webmaster - I don't think there is going to be an easy solution to the problem that will make everybody happy. The vast majority of posters use the edit function in a benign way. I personally will go in and edit out typos, usually within an hour of putting up the post. A small handful use the edit function for sinister goals.
Other websites I have posted on will clearly show somewhere in the message, usually at the top or bottom, if it has been edited. It might say "edited on Nov.7, 2010". And if there were multiple edits it will list the dates. And some sites even allow you to list the reason you have edited it. Such as 'spelling or grammar', or 'added additional content' etc. If people are going in and drastically altering the content and message of the original post, maybe you can put in a feature that saves the original post and allows a reader to click a button once they have opened it up so they can see what the original post was. And if adding links later on is the issue, maybe you should disallow the adding of links once a post has been put up. If it is that important, the original poster can always add a second post under it with a link. You are never going to be able to "scam-proof" curezone, but I think there are ways you can make it hard enough to abuse the system that most people won't bother.

This is a similar question to the privacy manager, people should not be allowed to use fake user names or numbers, this is wrong. If people want to ask sensitive questions, there is already the anonymous user number function.
This privacy manager is being used by moderators to hide their identity, so they can post on forums without people knowing who they are replying to. This is unethical and deceitful, particularly when they have the power to delete any posts that disagree with theirs, and to ban people from the forum.
I have had many posts deleted that did not breach TOS. Like the ones I pointed out in the thread below. (which have all been deleted, so people cannot see the evidence). Telling a poster it is the moderator deleting his posts and mine, not another poster who does not have moderator privileges. How does telling the truth constitute a breach of TOS.
There are also many posts, that are direct personal attacks, not being moderated, because the poster making the attacks, is favoured by the moderator.
This has been pointed out many times, and ignored by the WM.
As a result of this, many good people have left CZ, and the haemorrhaging is continuing. Soon the only ones left posting, will be the personal favourites of the moderators, and those moderators themselves.

What happens when you have a customer who tells you that the way you are running your business is wrong and you don't agree with them - and then they continue to come into your business day after day and shout about how badly they think you run your business?
I own my own business too and I too appreciate customer feedback. However, when I disagree then I expect the customer to either respect the fact that it is my business and either keep their objections to themselve or else take their business elsewhere. And if they won't listen and don't get the message, I will give them an assist by escorting them off the premises and not letting them come back.
Frankly, I am surprised that has not already happened. Clearly you have violated the owner's instructions to either stop bitching about one of the moderators or else find you and your IP address banned. Besides, from what I observed recently you don't mind doing your own censoring or forcing your opinion and agenda in a forum where you moderate, you just mind it when you think it has happened to you.
Public forums or not, it is a PRIVATE website. The owner sets the rules and enforces the rules as he sees fit. If you don't like the way it is run, stop your damned bitching and trying to force the owner to bend to your will and take your hardheadedness elsewhere. You and a few others are damned lucky that I don't own or moderate this site.

This is a reply to # 1,736,595I see Spud´s comments, observations, suggestions as very helpful and extremely level-headed. I admire her tenacity... especially since she (and a lot of others) observe how some important forums ( Politics Forum comes to mind immediately) are hijacked by one or two posters that crowd out the rest. She takes the time to speak out her opinion instead of ignoring them like a lot of us do. As soon as I read those few names, I don´t even bother to open up their post... which is unfortunate because I like reading diverse opinions. The universe thrives from diversity!!
Besides the fact that she contributes in a very POSITIVE manner with an excellent forum that had truly been missing on this fantastic website. In fact after all these years, this is one forum I look forward to visiting whenever I visit CZ.
What I miss alot here on CureZone is TOLERANCE! There are so many of US caught up in our egoistical, intolerant behaviour imagining only our point-of-view to be the right one. This has contributed to our sickness which is why we came here in the first place to learn and educate ourselves.
It is truly unfortunate that some very competent people (Moreless comes to mind) have been HOUNDED and sent away to create their own websites. Please let us not do this to Spudlydoo. As she has said herself (Moreless did the same as well)... if you do not agree with her point-of-view dont read her posts... then that won´t bother you! But you obviously do, because you know she (as Moreless did) has ALOT to say. So either read it and observe your intolerance or spend your time reading whatever else appeals to you.

Now, why don't you get over it. If you don't like what I post, don't read it, and don't respond. If you don't have any concerns about this site, then its simple, go about your own business, and don't get involved.
This is the way many people deal with problems, they simply put up and shut up, out of fear, and nothing changes.
The WM here doesn't have to do a damn thing, you are correct in that, this however doesn't mean I'm going to be one of those that shut up and put up. When I have a concern I will voice it, if the WM is upset by this, then he certainly has the ability to ban me.
I actually think the WM does have an interest in this site being a place where there is no censorship, and a respect for free speech.
I have made my concerns known, and I'm happy to leave it at that. There has already been some resolution, and explanation about what has been going on.
Your attempts at shutting people down, are not going to work with me. You are quite within your rights to put out your opinion, but you will not silence me, by trying to make out that I do not respect the WM, or this site.
In fact, the opposite is true. I have a lot of respect for this site, and there are many good people here, who help others tirelessly, and for no reward, except the knowledge that they are doing some good in the world. This is precisely why it is important to voice any concerns, before they can become major problems, and destroy what good is being done here.

This is a reply to # 1,736,879B&G - this question is NOT pointed directly at you, it's a question/thought I've wanted to post for quite some time. And since I just saw your post, this seems seemed to be the time.
The question/thought: What difference does it make whether a name or a number posts? Isn't it the *content* of the post that is the only true issue in sharing information or debating?
Of course, most all the names/numbers have their own traits, habits and "personalities"...but all those things don't actually make a hooters-toot of a difference to the validity of the content of a post. The truth from a troll is still the truth; a lie from an angel is still a lie.
I don't see how the words of a totally anonymous "name" have more or less validity or credibility than someone posting under a totally anonymous "number"...or how they differ in the way they affect CZ as a whole.
Sure, sure, I realize there's an entire (very Matrix-ish) pseudo-social kind of 'society' on internet forums...but unless a poster is one of the extremely few that have associated their real life with their anonymous/name or number, there's nothing REAL about it. But actually, that's a different topic.

You bring up a valid point. In my mind, to condense it, what you in essence are saying....
Why does it matter if you put up a post by your username, which isn't really your true name, or a number? They both are anonymous. Uny - you and a few of the other private forum owners can have your real names found out when push comes to shove, but this is not the case for 99% of the curezone posters. So......
Whats the big deal?? We all are just anonymous posters??!! Why the fuss???
Well the big deal in my mind is that the whole number aspect means that individual posters can post under two idenities. And while must won't abuse this priviledge, well past curezone history has shown that certain people do abuse it. And as I said before on this forum, curezone is the only website that I have seen this option allowed. And for good reason. All other websites don't want to even touch this boondoggle with a ten foot pole. The possibilities for abuse are endless. And while you Uny, and the people that post on your forum, don't abuse it.........
Well unfortunately others do. And it is a shame that a small percentage of the people ruin it for the rest of us. Because in a perfect world the concept has merit.
