It doesn't require a doctor visit. You can order the test online, go to a local lab where the blood is drawn and get your results online and/or via mail.
The test you want is the HerpeSelect IgG for both types 1 & 2
There's another similar service, but I can't remember their URL off the top of my head.

I didn't mention in the other message that antibody testing is only reliable for negative results when you're 12 to 16 weeks after the most recent exposure. Earlier positive results are to be believed, but not negatives.
