my daughter started having seizure sine when she was 13 (start of her puberty with period) docs put her on 100mg lamictal for over 4 years. then eeg was done on her and result was that she is normal and she can quit taking medicine. but soon after quiting seizures came back. so she is back on lamictal 100mg. till last thanksgiving she has another seizure and another in dec. so docs doubled her dose to 200 mg. but she got 4 seizures after doubling the does. what is your recommendations please.

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,050,099I have little experience with actually helping anyone with epilepsy, but for several months lived in the same residence as a man who had several seizures a day - averaging three a night. As a result, I have quite a bit of information about the natural and nutritional approach to epilepsy. Unfortunately, the poor man I refer to refused to believe nature could help if the doctors could do little for him and never tried a single alternative to their largely ineffective medicines.
Could you tell me a bit more, such as what kinds of seizures your daughter is having (for example grand mal, petite mal, etc.)

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,050,175I agree with Tony diet can be a big factor. Many, particularly children benefit from whats called the "ketogenic Diet" a low carb high fat (oils) diet that works for these children when all else has failed.
The ketogenic diet followed in these clinics are very tightly controlled and food preperation is exact ,with all items being weighed to the ounce. This diet should be only done under guidance or supervision by someone trained in this protocol.
However I have read and know someone with epilepsy who claims the low carb Atkins type diet also help a lot ,she claims no siezures while on the diet, she also says the hardest part about the diet was staying on it because of being brought up on the standard american diet and her cravings for junk food.
I think diet is critical in all health issues. Good nutritional foods whether they be protien ,fats or complex carbohydrates (vegetables and fruits) with high nutritional value and completeley giving up junk food is essential to return to good health.

This is a reply to # 1,050,415Indeed there are dietary considerations which have had wonderful results with epilepsy, including generalized tonic-clonic epilepsy (previously known as Grand Mal).
DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS:- Eat sour milk products like organic yogurt and kefir.
- Include beet greens, chard, eggs, green leafy vegetables, raw cheese, raw milk, raw nuts, seeds and fermented soy products such as miso, tempeh and natto.
- Drink fresh "live" juices made from beets, carrots, green beans, green leafy vegetables, peas, red grapes, and seaweed for concentrated nutrients.
- Eat small meals, do ot drink large quantities of liquids at once, and take 2 tablespoons of olive oil daily.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages, animal protein, fried foods, artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame, caffeine, and nicotine. Avoid refined foods and sugar.

- Do not try t put anything in the person's mouth. A person having a seizure may bite his or her tongue, but this is not life threatening.
- Try to restrain a fall so that the person does not hit something as he or she collapses. Often, the person knows he or she is about to have a seizure and you can ask him or her to sit on the floor, or help him or her sit down.
- Leave the person lying flat on a safe surface. Do not put anything under the person's head.. If possible, turn the person onto his or her side, propping him or her in that position with cushions at the back during the seizure. This way, any saliva or blood from a bitten tongue will be able to flow out of the mouth.
- In case of the loss of bladder of bowel control, if possible, loosely cover the person with a blanket to protect his or her privacy.
- Do not panic. Loosen any tight clothing to make the person more comfortable. Stay with the person until the seizure has stopped. He or she may be confused and tired immediately after the seizure.
- If the person has repeated seizures, on after another, seek medical assistance. With a baby or young child, medical help should be sought immediately.
CONSIDERATIONS:
Most people who have epilepsy are aware of their condition and take medication to control the seizures. Possible side effects or antiseizure medications include blood disorders, fatigue, liver problems, and mental fatigue or fogginess.
Other types of drugs can interact with antiseizure medications, lessening or intensifying the effects of one drug or another. Alcohol, birth control pills, the antibiotic erythromycin, and some types of asthma, ulcer and heart medications are known to interact with certain epilepsy drugs.

*NOTE: The recommendation to avoid animal protein would by itself appear to eliminate using the Atkins diet, even though some suggest that it has had benefits for epilepsy. I would go further and say that I would never recommend the Atkins diet to anyone for any reason. It is my opinion (shared by a great many others) that Atkins got a great deal right but that his diet was ultimately fatally flawed when the marketing became centered around the simple and unhealthy formula of basically eliminating carbohydrates and eating just about anything else you wanted. including junk food and excessive unhealthy fats. Some carbohydrates are essential for good health and I am one of the ones who believe it was telling when the autopsy conducted on Atkins (and later covered up) revealed significant problems and major deterioration of virtually all his major organs and systems. Strict adherence to his diet may indeed result in weight loss, but you have to continue the diet to maintain the weight loss and an increasing number of studies which came after everyone jumped aboard the Atkins diet fad bandwagon indicate that such long term use runs a likely risk of developing chronic problems that can eventually be life shortening if not life threatening.
Essentially all of the above information about diet, save my opinions on the Atkins diet, and vitamins and minerals, and much, much more, is found in my favorite reference book for nutritional healing Prescription for Nutritional Healing, authored by an MD and Naturopath husband and wife team, which has been the bestseller in it's category for the past 20 years and is now out in a very recent 4th edition. It contains much more information epilepsy, including a lengthy list of the most important vitamins and minerals and other important considerations and steps to take - so much so that it would take me hours and hours to re-type it here.
I recommend that you purchase that extremely valuable book - in fact I recommend that EVERYBODY purchase it. The one I recommend is the latest edition and it costs less than $25 including shipping and is available on the internet and in bookstores everywhere. I promise you that it could very well be the best $25 you will ever spend. I consider it a virtual natural health bible. Unlike some mainstream apologists, I do not worship it as they appear to do medical science and mainstream medicine - but I surely do give thanks for having found it!

This is a reply to # 1,050,577Although some my not 'personally' agree with these diets their success rates and the releif offered to thousands of lives ,childrens lives, should surpass any personal biases towards them. In spite of the fact that many people misunderstood the Atkins diet and despite the whitewash of misinformation put forth by the establishment sufferers of epilepsy have found relief from their debilitating disease.
Those looking for insight or direction should ignore personal and politicially correct judgements.
I myself am not a huge fan of these diets but I dont have epilepsy or some other disease that may benefit from them and would be the last person to belittle them and diminish thier value to someone in need .
The simple fact that the ketogenic diet has proven to stop or diminish epileptic siezures warrants some credit, there are few other protocols that can make that claim.

This is a reply to # 1,050,621Then I suppose we will have to agree to disagree on the subject of the Atkins diet - and I suggest that many accuse the Atkins crowd of the bias and whitewash and that those who disagree with it are far from limited to mainstream proponents. As a matter of fact, mainstream medicine jumped aboard the Atkins bandwagon in droves and stayed far too long after problems begin showing up in studies.
At any rate, I like your other suggestions and appreciate your input on my forum. Since it is my forum, however, I now ask that you allow me to proceed to point the original poster towards the best information I can.
Most issues involving natural treatments, diets and protocols have proponents as well as opponents. But this is not the Debate Tony Isaacs forum, it is the Ask Tony Isaacs forum and I intend to limit debate as much as possible without silencing those who have differences of opinion or preventing input from others. I readily admit that I don't have all the answers, and neither does anyone else.

This is a reply to # 1,050,644I stand back Tony! However it is not whether we agree or disagree ,we are not the ones facing this debilitating disease. Studies have proven the affectivenes of these diets and many have benefitted. Like I said this may not be the diet I would choose under normal circumstances and understand why some beleive them to be extreme, but if I had a child suffering from epilepsy I would not allow my personal biases to distract me from fully investigating any and all treatments that show some promise or hope.
I can see we are at opposite ends of the spectrum on this issue ,so thanks for not slamming me to hard and respecting my opinion, as I do yours ,so I will opt out respectfully and allow those that are responsible for having to make these decisions to do so with at least more then one option to consider.

It is especially interesting since it highlights 2 current dietary methods: the traditional raw vegetarian diet of Dr. Shelton's Natural Hygiene, and the newer views of modern NH involving the insulin mechanism.

I'm writing this email on behalf of a friend;
I was talking with my friend, who's brother suffers from Epilepsy with generalised tonic clonic seizures and learning difficulties. His cocktail of drugs include: Carbamazepine, Sodium Valproate, Phenobarbitone, Clobazam and Desmopressin. I appreciate that these may be the English names of drugs.
Are you able to treat forms of Epilepsy with a specific dietary regime or otherwise? It would be greatly appreciated to know that there is a chance of help for his condition, which conventional medicine seems unable to resolve!

This is a reply to # 1,050,672I am not allowing my personal bias but rather my studied opinion based on the information I have researched and the opinions of others I respect who are far more knowledgeable than you or I, and quite frankly I will not tolerate any further insinuations that it is merely my personal bias when it comes to Atkins.
As a matter of fact, I have conducted extensive research into just about every major diet out there in preparation for my own upcoming diet book. There are several features of Atkins that I like, and he did some ground breaking things - BUT, due to the fatal flaws in the complete diet, I would never recommend it to anyone under any circumstance, and I will not be having it recommended on this forum.
I might point out that in opposing the Atkins diet, I am not opposing a ketogenic diet, however it was you who specifically mentioned the Atkins diet and proceeded to "debate" the merits of my information and/or perceived bias.
Dr. Atkins pioneered studies into the benefits of the ketogenic diet and these later became the basis for the famous Atkins fad diet which came to be marketed as a diet where you could basically eat all the animal fats, other fats and even junk food you wanted so long as you elminated carbohydrates.Initially a great many people, including mainstream medicine, jumped aboard the bandwagon of such an appealing diet. However, as time went by reality sunk in and an increasing number of studies began to indicate long term damage risks associated with a diet that restricts all carbohdrates.
This appeared to be borne out when Dr. Atkins autopsy revealed that he was obese, had suffered a heart attack, had atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and had high blood pressure, later hushed up and given the spin-doctor treatment by the Atkins family and empire. This attempt at coverup was countered almost immediately by then New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who announced ""I don't believe that %¤#&!§-that [Atkins] dropped dead slipping on the sidewalk." The 61-year-old billionaire added that Atkins was "fat" and served "inedible" food at his Hamptons home when Bloomberg visited. The mayor's inference, of course, was that Atkins was actually felled by his meat-heavy diet, that his arteries were clogged with beef drippings.
The simple fact is, some carbohydrates are essential for good health. So long as that is kept in mind, the ketogenic diet approach could be a good one.

This is a reply to # 1,050,728You flatter me - I am no doctor, just a self taught individual with many thousands of hours of study and research. It is probably a good thing I am not a licensed mainstream doctor, if I were I would likely not know nearly as much as I do about natural healing, diet, nutrition, lifestyle and natural supplements.
It would probably be pretty easy for me to obtain a correspondence degree in naturopathy if I so desired, but so far I am of the opinion that doing so would be pretentious.
I do recommend that you and just about anyone would find the book very beneficial to have on hand - not just for your daughter, although that is of course our primary consideration here - but for just about any condition you or someone you care for may encounter.
Checking it out first at the local library is a great idea. Please come back and let us know what you think about it.
Now, somehow you must get through to your young lady. The excuse of not wanting to be on a diet because she is busy is just that - an excuse. Does she mean to have us believe that she had rather continue suffering seizures and having increased medications, and that doing so would not be far more "inconvenient" than proper diet, hygiene and supplementation?
Alas - I know how it is to be young, immortal and have all the answers, having once been that way myself. The older and hopefully wiser I become, the more humble I become in finding out just how little I know, no matter how much I learn.

I developed petit mal epilepsy when I was 6 years old (grew out of it in my teens).
I developed epilepsy after trying to balance on a park fence and fell (I guess it was my head that hit the ground, no recollection of 46 years ago). Young people don't know how to protect themselves from serious injury when they fall (by putting their arms in front of them), so that might be something your child should be made aware of.
The doctor put me on dilantin and phenobarbitol 3 times a day. I took that faithfully for 5 years (except a few times I forgot). The times that I forgot my pills, my body went limp. There was one time (I was about 8), that I was leaving school walking down the stairs and suddenly my body went limp (petit mal seizures are only a "limp body"). I tried to sit down on the stairs, but my whole body was limp, so I slid down a whole flight with my head bobbing up and down on each stair. Since it was winter and I was dressed up in a windbreaker with my hood up, my head was cushioned and there was no problem, it was just an adventure (kids have rubber bones).
After 5 years, the doctor took me off the phenobarb because it didn't affect me anymore. I also became very sloppy/careless in taking my meds (took them 2 or 3 times a week once or twice a day) and I took them with milk, coffee, soda, beer, wine, etc., anything but water. I figured (without doctor consultation or knowledge) that I'm growing out of epilepsy. I experienced light seizures maybe once every other week for about a minute when my right arm would go limp. Pretty soon, I took one pill a month or every other month (for good measure, "teenager's guilt") and decided not to believe that I have epilepsy anymore. I never again had epilepsy.
I always had confidence/faith that human beings are only as weak, vulnerable, and susceptible as we choose to believe, and that we allow ourselves to be convinced by doctors and "science" that we should be dependent on them FOREVER. No doubt, the whole world thinks that is "crazy talk" and wishes to remain being validated by the medical establishments of this world (so, pardon my "freedom"/"power to the people" talk), but I'd like to present to you the option of disbelieving that a "biological discrepancy" of childhood (or at any age) automatically translates into lifelong slavery to the pharmaceutical and medical industries and their "science". It is everybody's God given right to live as a "clinical object" if they so choose, and limit themselves to treatment/healing as though they are chemical/mathematical formula (we are HUMAN BEINGS, not formulas), but the initial treatment for epilepsy in childhood can very well only be temporarily necessary (instead of a lifelong sentence). A child's inner strength to have faith/confidence in themselves may be the best lesson they could ever learn.
There is something called "Psychoneuroimmunology" that could be considered meaningful in what I say (and "Psychobiology").
There are many "biological discrepancies" that cause problems and require medical/nutritional attention, but we must realize that the pharm/med industry is really no different than the government with it's disinformation to manipulate society and convince us to be life-long slaves.
When I had epilepsy, I had to remember not to stare at blinking lights...traffic lights, etc. Today, there are many more that must be avoided by the patient with epilepsy,...such as the VCR if the time hasn't been set, hard drive lights, etc. (doctors don't always explain these cautions), maybe even television's "flashes" of light.
So, restoring your child to health with these certain diets and nutrients/herbs might be sufficient (the worst thing you can do is panic and convince her or think it will be necessary forever).
I heard that putting the wallet in the mouth when the person is lying down is so the person doesn't SWALLOW their tongue (so always be aware of that when she has seizures).
