Blog: My 30 Day Juice Fast Journal
Nothing much exciting happened on day six of the juice fast.
Like I said yesterday, I've gotten into the groove of the fast so things so far are really going well. I'm amazed at how much energy I have. I know I've read about getting bursts of energy once on it but it really is surprising me. I went to the gym last night and got on the treadmill for over and hour (not that that is a spectactular accomplishment in itself) and burned (according to the machine) 550 calories. By my estimate I didn't even take in that much juice all of yesterday!!! AND I wasn't the least bit tired when I got off!!!
On the weight tip, I lost another 4 pounds!!! (I'm just a little concerned about my rapid weight loss at this point) I've gone from 240 to 220 in 11 days. Is it possible that was all water weight??? When I went to see my Doc after I got my blood work results back he was astonished (at that point I had lost 12lbs). I don't want to be one of those people thinking they're just fine...then keels over on their cycle of a heart-attack.
On a slightly depressing tip my wife wakes up this morning and tells me she resents me (not like I already knew that). She actually said it!!! What the hell am I supposed to respond with??? I love her very much but it really sucks to not be supported by your partner, you know?? I'm not really sure how to address it. I don't really feel like expending my energy on trying to get her on board with my fast. Almost like something inside me is saying that is the wrong approach. I'd like to try to raise my level of understanding and patience not only now but for the future as well. Ultimately, I'd like to get to that point where I can focus my fast towards connecting more with my spirituality but maybe that will just take time... It doesn't seem possible with the attitude in my bed currently.
Has anyone ever experienced blood-shot eyes on a juice fast?? I seem to have them every day yet I'm getting plenty of restful sleep?? I hope it's just detoxing of some sort. My family has a history on both sides of macular degeneration so I'm a little paranoid about my ocular health. Well I guess thats all
Till Tommorrow,
Bearded One
PS In case you care to know I'm pretty much down to 2 11 oz juices every day. One for "breakfast" and one for "dinner". My new favorite combo is
50% carrot
30% Beet
10% Parsley
5% Apple
5% Ginger
Talk about mmm mmm good.

Where is your protein coming from?

Fruit and vegetable juices have water soluble highly absorbable proteins.
Also, the body has a store of protein, and it uses it selectively. Dieing cells are the first to be used and healthy and vital tissues are the very last and will only be used as a last resort (so I've read, anyway). If I really get concerned about my protein loss I will add spirulina to my juices. I've read that 30 days is completely safe for this type of "diet" if you will (many people have done 50,60,90, and 120 with positive results).
I'm hoping to build back up after the fast as well (I've already purchase 10 private training sessions at my gym after I'm finished) Actually, I'd like to do more research on the best way to do that. Not to sound vain but I'd like to be able to be happy with the way I look (as well as how I feel ;).
Peace,
Bearded One

I recall reading that the only non-animal food that is a "complete" protein is the soybean. Now I realize that many vegan types with try to convince you that this is propaganda. I go to a gym 3 times a week and I don't think that you'll find many serious weight lifters/personal trainers who would endorse this type of diet for very long. I think you probably risk losing muscle tissue which is undesirable. If the body is starved of protein it will start to live off of itself.

It's actually not a diet
It's a juice fast and main reason I'm doing it is for a cleansing. The weight loss is nice but is really secondary. I'm doing it for 30 days which seems to be a standard period for this type of detox. Actually, if you are familiar with info on personal training, diet and fitness I'd love for you to send me some links or info.
After I complete the fast I will be started a training program and I really want to get my body into top shape. I'm in a sedentary work field and have avoided the gym due to exercise related asthma. I actually haven't had any attacks since I've started the fast!!! (don't know if that can be attributed to the fast or not--but it's a nice side-effect) I look forward to hearing from you.
Peace,
Dan

I don´t claim to be an expert but I´ve done a good bit of reading over the last several years due largely to having developed type two diabetes several years ago. The best advice is to read from many different sources and look for the patterns. Don´t get too sucked in by anyone that almost everyone believe is a quack. Most of what I´ve read from what I consider to be credible sources say that the whole fasting-detox stuff is largely not true. Specifically in this case I think it was the intelihealth site associated with Harvard that commented on the fasting thing. It isn´t necessary or beneficial etc. It doesn´t rid the body of toxins or anything like that. This is mostly used to sell products. I realize that you´ve probably heard all this before.

I am still on the "fast" (not really a fast of course) so I'm too close at this point to make an objective decision about the overall benefits of this course of action. I can tell you that so far all the benefits & side-effects I've read about are happening to me. If nothing else, since most of the world major prophets believed in and actively fasted I feel like I am getting something historically/spiritually from it.
On the health concern/tip, Europeans have been fasting in Spa's for decades and they seem to do quite well with it. I don't think general medicine has studied the benefits or consequences of juice-fasting enough to really proclaim any sort of definitive judgement. If so, I've yet to come across the article.
The experience is almost like stepping beyond what you would normally think possible and finding that not only is it possible but that it comes with new and profound experiences. I guess it would be impossible for you yourself to try the juice fast since you are diebetic. It's a shame since it is something I now believe everyone (who doesn't have containdications like yourself) should try at least once and judge for themselves.

any ideas on post-fast diet for weight-training and fitness??

- What juicer are you using? by tikay

Hi there,
I am so inspired with your blog and so interested with the juicing thing. I know that finding a good juicer is the first step on successful juice fast. Can you please let me know or do you have any suggestions as to what juicer brand to use? What do you use personally? Is it good enough and how much did you get it? Thanks a lot. I appreciate your time and reply.

Hey There,
Glad to hear you interested in trying it out. Although this is my first time I can tell you that A) it's not that hard, B) You generally feel great while on it (at least that has been my experience) & C) You'll find that you have much more time in the day to do whatever you want (due to the abscense of cooking, cleaning and shopping for food--although cleaning your juicer will depend on which one you pick)
I, myself, bought a crappy hamilton juicer (I would not recommend). I used to own an awesome champion juicer (but they are like $300-$500) but I lost it somewhere during one of my moves. There are a number of good $150-$250 juicers out there. I haven't really tested them out but the Brevell Juice fountains have gotten rave reviews from juice sites. I will probably get one before my next juice fast. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions about the process. I'd be happy to share.
Peace,
Bearded One

I'm planning to have a lot of green vegetable juices, I think i will be needing it more cause my blood sugar got high at some time and I just had a gallbladder surgery a month ago. Since you have tried it already, does the champion juicer juices green leafy vegies such as dandellion, collard greens and spinach? Do you have any idea if juice fasting is okey if i just had my gallbladder removed?
Thanks a lot for your time!

Good questions
As far as the juicer goes the champion can do green leafys...but not the best. I think if thats the route you want to go you might want to get a twin-gear juicer (research the green-power juicers).
As far as post surgury, I'm not a doctor so I couldn't really advise you with any type of credentials. That being said, I think you would be totally OK to do the juice-fast for at least three or four days. Probably the energy you save in digestion would be beneficial to your healing process. Good luck and keep me informed of what you are doing!!!
