Shelley: What Soy products are ok?
by slawrence 20 y
View Entire Thread 4
Hi Shelley! Hope you are well. I’ve been reading more about the dangers of soy and it seems that fermented soy products like miso, tempeh, etc. are supposedly ok. However, I am not sure what constitutes unfermented soy products.
Would that be:
tofu
veggie burgers
meat substitutes like tofu dogs/soy sausages/etc?
I understand soy milk and the regular soybeans are ones to avoid. But I am confused about other soy products mentioned above.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Food Allergy and other nonsense
by Midge 19 y
We’ve recently found out that our son is allergic to milk, soy, and eggs. The doc that we see said that the bible of allergies is http://www.foodallergy.org. And here http://foodallergy.org/allergens.html#soy it says that for people allergic to soy it is ok to have soybean oil (certain kinds) and soy lecithin. It’s usually the soy protein that people are allergic to. But check with your doc.
I would definitly do some liver cleanses, and a bowel cleanse (drnatura.com)
Hope this helps,

I have read a whole bunch of stuff regarding how unhealthy soy products are for humans. A local health food store here in my area won’t sell anything made from soy except miso, they believe that strongly about it. I skimmed a whole folder of articles on the subject in their book section a few months ago. Next time I’m there I will check it out and see if I can give you a reference or sum it up in a nutshell. It sounds like the soy industry is similar to the dairy industry in their marketing and making us think this is good for us. I’ve also heard that American soy is different genetic ...

Hey, thanks for the heads-up on rice, Without Sugar! :) Looks like we stood in the same line when somebody was handing out allergies. Perhaps other protein supplements should be tried by folks before settling on soy, if only bacause of some of the common soy warnings one hears, although I suspect such warnings might be a bit overblown. While researching a while back, I noticed that The Mayo Clinic and a few other reputable medical institutions didn’t seem to have any problem with soy so long as portions were typical (I seem to recall ”25 grams soy protein/day” or something like that, which ...

Yes I’ve noticed that most (if not all) big names have jumped on the soy bandwagon! It’s partly monetary, I suppose, but also because once a few start promoting it, then the others feel pressure - soy is ”hip” now. They have some ”science” to show that soy is ”good” for people (stuff like how tofu has added calcium, and soy is a good source of protein - even though this is not an ideal way to take calcium, and most people overeat protein) but seems that the science is a wee bit feeble and ignores other science out there that shows the major problems with soy. So it’s not to say that people ...

CureMe,
Oh, but I love my Soy Milk. Are you sure it’s bad? I tried the Rice Milk and disliked the taste a lot. The Sun Soy is supposed to be Pasteurized from what I got from their web site:
Is Sun Soy pasteurized?
Yes. All Sun Soy products are pasteurized. Ultra High Temperature (UHT) pasteurization is used to make sure that Sun Soy is free of harmful microorganisms. This process is extremely fast, thus avoiding enzyme and nutrient breakdown.
I’d like to stick with Soy if I can.
Thank you,

Tofu is definitely something to avoid. IF you want to eat soy at all, then how about tempeh, or miso? They are fermented so you can have them in moderation. If you can find something that has been naturally fermented then it is okay. But it’s still important to eat non-GMO, and to eat small quantities, because it can wreak havoc on your hormones!
Of course, you can consume anything occasionally, be it tofu, or brownies, just be aware!

The problem is that the Soy industry has deep pockets, and like the tobacco industry, has a well funded crowd of attorneys, and in-the-pocket researchers who launch well-funded all-out assaults on any negative findings by other researchers. MSG is a natural by product in the fermentation process of making wheat-based soy sauce.
