300 mg Lugol's vs. 100 mg Lugol's
by baccheion 4 years ago
What’s the reasoning behind taking 300 mg Lugol’s iodine versus 100 mg? I read that 100 mg is the bare minimum, but that some take 300 mg. Will 100 mg be sufficient or should I consider 300 mg? If taking 300 mg, do I need more L-selenomethionine (600 mcg rather than 200 mcg, for example) or ATP cofactors (6 servings of 100 mg riboflavin + 500 mg inositol hexaniacinate rather than 2)? What about vitamin C?

Thank you for your answer. I usually take iodine on empty stomach before I leave home early in the morning (as I put 4 drops into the capsule, and have to take it immediately, so it wouldn’t melt it.), then eat breakfast/snack around 9 or 10 and take companion nutrients - 200 mcg selenium (l-selenomethionine), 300-400 mg of magnesium malate, 1-2 grams of vit C, B complex, 100-200 B2 and 250 of regular flush niacin, and sometimes add a few capsules of Seeking Health multivitamin (the one you would need 8 per day for full dose.) There are a couple of ways to make Selenomethionine. The cheapest is to throw some elemental Selenium and bacteria into a container and let that convert it to Selenomethionine. It’s not really normal yeast but OK we can call it yeast.
The problem occurs with the quality control in that process, a company without controls buying from the cheapest supplier (China) may sell you 50/50 elemental Selenium/Selenomethionine, they really have no idea how much has been converted nor do they test. However that same ”ULTRA” cheap selenium from yeast can be 1/99 elemental Selenium/Selenomethionine a ...

Keep in mind there is not overdose for Selenomethionine but since selenium not bound to methionine robs the body there is an issue with pure selenium.
That said Selenium from yeast is at least partially converted to Selenomethionine...

Selenomethionine vs SeMC

This is a nifty article posted by Newport some time ago. There’s an illustration on page 3 that shows where selenomethionine has its effects, then where SeMC has its effects. If you have a lot of selenomethionine left over after its other reactions, it might affect the level of SeMC. But SeMC, to the best of my knowledge, cannot go backwards and function as selenomethionine. For extra cancer protection, I can see the use for supplementing SeMC, but I wouldn’t do without selenomethionine for my everyday life.

With all due respect to Wombat, the best type of selenium to use may depend on your purpose for supplementing it. In that same Newport post --
- There are two distinct functions of Selenium
- One is as an antioxidant or detoxifier (Heavy Metals) and as a building block of proteins and enzymes. This form is stored in the format of Selenite and Selenomethionine by the tissue.
- The other requires further conversion, first to Selenomethionine then to methylselenol then further into anti-cancer anti cell differentiating functions.

I would go for the selenium yeast(with alfalfa) if that’s all you can find. It will contain some inorganic selenium too as well as selenomethionine and other selenium compounds.
So yeast free selenomethionine is the best, then selenium yeast then the amino-chelated maybe then inorganic selenite or selenate which is the least bioavailable and most toxic
Maybe someone help can help you out more, I’m always looking for better and cheaper sources
Se-methylselenocysteine (SeMC) is also a good source
It looks like the Bishofit contains a lot of Bromine.

A lot of us have gotten the ”Now” brand of this (which is fairly inexpensive) and the bottle clearly says ”yeast-free selenium” on the front orange label. It is NOT the elemental form of selenium (of which you should NOT take more than 200mcg daily) but DOES take the form of selenomethionine (of which is much safer) and can be taken at higher doses (especially at times of greater detoxification discomforts.)

One CAN take too much elemental Selenium. A safer way to take more is getting it as selenomethionine.

triboron from twinlabs - 9mg
selenomethionine - 200mcg
you can take up to 15mg of boron to replenish (youll have to figure that out) but then cut down to 9. same with the selenium. with selenomethionine, up to 800mcg can be taken for a little while in order to catch up.

selenomethionine is the only one to use. it is NOT from yeast, not directly anyway. if it says ”from yeast” it can have elemental selenium in it which is detrimental to glutathione stores and can damage the liver with severe toxicity leading to death. selenomethionine can be taken in the 200-800mcg range, depending on the need. 1200mcg being a max therapeutic level for temporary.
200mcg should be enough for daily supps.

you need selenomethionine. selenium from yeast will use up your bodys ability to metabolize other molecules and lead to problems. at 100mg or more of iodine one should take the full 800mcg(thats MICROgrams, not MILLIgrams) of selenomethionine. one can reach a point where that is too much selenomethionine, but as long as you dont take the other kind that would be rare indeed. a little bit of a balancing act but not hard at all.

SeMC is designed to bypass a bunch of complicated conversions required and go directly to the cellular level; this is what makes it so effective in marking cancer cells for organized destruction vs. necrosis.
But from my tests even taking large amounts of SeMC is not good enough. The body still needs elemental Selenium and Selenomethionine. To make Selenomethionine from elemental selenium it needs to go through a Methylation cycle and that isn’t always working. Sel ...

Mainly because there are +20 stages of selenoprotein / selenoenzymes and most texts use Selenite not Selenomethionine. You simply can’t get enough selenium in to bind Hg without moving to Selenomethionine.
As for Andy he does NOT consider the bond between Se and Hg permanent, others disagree but with cheap DMSA why argue?
Certainly I did well with Selenomethionine but as a cost basis DMSA is cheaper and appears to have a better bond.
