Today's tampons are generally safe if you make sure and change them often. Always use the smallest tampon for your needs. Avoid using them if if have any infection any where in your body. Do not use them if you have irritation or raw skin in the vaginal area. If you wear one while swimming or soaking in a tub, change them as soon as possible. On your heaviest days try and wear a pad only for a few hours when you can. Also, wear apad on your lightest days to avoid possible abrashion of the vaginal wall when changing a dry tampon. Never leave a tampon inside you more than eight hours max. Like with most things in life, the safety with tampons is largely a matter of you taking proper precautions.
