My mom just shakes her head when I send her these articles about modern medicine "discovering" the use of maggots. She was a surgical nurse with the International Red Cross stationed in mobile army hospitals just off the front lines (in Europe) and said they always packed the wounds with maggots to prevent sepsis. In those conditions they never knew when the patient might get the next bandage change. Antibiotics were relatively new and certainly in short supply. Maggots and leeches saved the lives of many wounded people.

Maggots and leeches are also part of ayurvedic and traditional chinese medicine protocols. They've been used for thousands of years.
