Hi. I've been on Iodine for quite some time starting with very low doses (kelp) and I've been on 12.5 mg (Iodoral) now for 3 weeks. Going beyond 3 mg/day brought up pretty awful detox symptoms, mostly sinus issues and kidney pain, but salt pushes have made the situation bearable (I've been doing okay the past couple of days). In a week I should be able to up my dosage should that be the right thing to do. Problem is: I don't know if it is the right thing to do!
I have seen mentioned on the internet that women should take 50 mg of Iodine daily for 90 days in order to attain sufficiency. More Iodine is required, or taken in longer duration, for obese women. But what about a non-obese (5'7", 150 lbs) man? Clearly men require less iodine than women. Is 25 mg daily for 90 days sufficient? What do the likes of Flechas, Abraham and Brownstein say??
BTW, iodine has been utterly wonderful for me. I started taking it because my thyroid was judged as performing inadequately based on TSH values (5.86), although my free T4 was okay. No bad hypothyroid symptoms other than feeling cold at times. Well the results have been unexpected. In a very short while iodine has:
- significantly reduced my Psoriasis (, an autoimmune disease). I think it is because of its antibacterial/antifungal properties but I really don't know for sure. My Psoriasis used to be severe. Going on a low carb Paleo diet has improved it to a mild state. Iodine has improved it further; I noticed this within 3 days of taking 3 mg of iodine daily (Prolamine).
- restored my libido, to the level suitable for someone my age (57). My libido was fine until I was 50. I then noticed a slight degradation over the next few years. But in the last couple of years it was like my male member was disconnected from my body, ... quite devastating. Within a couple of weeks (I was probably on 1/2 Iodoral at the time) I noticed a TREMENDOUS difference; my libido is now back to what it was several years ago. I have to wonder how many guys my age who are taking meds for erectile dysfunction when all they need is some iodine!
It seems that my hypothyroid condition might be improving too. My basal temperature never seemed to get about 98.2 during the day, 97.3 upon waking. The last couple of days I've recorded temperatures of about 99 degrees. I'm hoping this increased basal temperature will be the norm moving forward.
...and thanks to all the long timers on this forum. You have done myself and a great many others a tremendous service.
