I think the article I posted, What does God expect of me?, explains what I believe well on this. Is it us performing for God, producing the fruit, or is it Him doing it all as we abide in Him. And the key here, is abiding in Him, which means just putting our trust in Him everyday to do all these things in us, because otherwise we are going to be depending on ourselves to do it, which fails.
Also, it says fruits of the spirit, which means it's the Spirit in us producing the fruit.

"So when you look at God’s commands, don’t attempt to obey them on your own effort…but instead ask God, who lives inside of you, to produce that in you. If God says to love each other, he doesn’t intend for you to march off with enthusiastic responsibility and show God how loving you can be. Instead he wants you to depend on him, “God, I ask you to live in my heart and cause me to see this person as you do, and put love in my heart for this person in the same way that you love them. I cannot love them on my own, but ask that your great love would be produced in my life for them.”"

I had a big falling out with my sister last year. I think I told you some about that. I was really angry with her, more so than I had ever been. I felt extremely hurt and just so tired of even trying to make the relationship work. We didn't talk for many many months. I knew I didn't have it in me to try to reconcile. I kept feeling like it needed to happen though. I felt the law about it hanging over me.
And I think the more I kept telling myself I had to conjure up the right feelings and do the right thing, the more
angry I felt. It was when I just layed it on God, and said, I can't do this, and I need you to produce forgiveness in me for her, that I felt peace about it, and my anger went away, and we started talking again.

If we are abiding in Christ, trusting Him, He's going to make sure we are producing good fruit, high brix fruit. :) But where there is dead branches producing no fruit, he's going to cut those off. And that part causes us pain sometimes. He's going to prune us to perfection, just like a good fruit tree owner would do if he wanted the best fruit.

John 15:1

<< John 15 >>
English Standard Version
I Am the True Vine

1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
