I had this done about two weeks ago. My mirena was embedded but not perforated, meaning that some tissue had grown over the mirena and was holding it in place so it couldn't just be pulled out. It turned out that it was just at the tips of the T-shape that it was scarred over.
I had a choice between general anesthetic and a spinal. I chose the spinal because I'm terrified of anesthetic, and honestly that was the worst part of the procedure.
I could feel slight pressure when they opened the speculum, but nothing else. They did a d&c guided by a scope, meaning that they only scraped away the tissue that was preventing the mirena from coming out. I was out of the hospital about 3 hours later. I was a little tender that evening (walking slowly, standing up and sitting down gently), but mostly fine by the next day. The only lingering effects I had were bruising on my back from the spinal, although I think I would have felt worse if I'd had the general. I wasn't tired or anything.
I had light bleeding for about a day, and then very light brownish bleeding (i.e. old blood) for a few more days. I was shocked when I got my period right on schedule 8 days after the surgery. My period was lighter than usual, since they'd already removed some of the lining, but still a normal period.
Overall, it was a lot less traumatic than I expected. I'm hoping to start trying to get pregnant within a few months, so I guess we'll see how that goes - but my surgeon says she doesn't think there was any damage done that would affect my fertility.
If you have any questions I haven't answered, feel free to contact me. Good luck!
