I can't understand why anyone would buy an american car except just on principle or something - but the american companies don't deserve that kind of loyalty. I have a 94 toyota pickup that is running perfectly - we just had it tuned and otherwise maintained and it still has a long ways to go. One thing happened to it in all these years besides the usual brakes, tires and occasional hose that have to be replaced and that was that the water pump went out somewhere after about 100,000 miles. This has been a very reliable vehicle. Imagine never having to bring it in to the mechanic except for normal servicing. We also have an 84 volvo that runs great and gets even better mileage than the pick up - the pickup get around 27 or 28 mis. per gallon. The volvo gets a bit more than that - that's pretty good for a big huge and heavy station wagon that is a bit like a tank. There are tons of these old volvos around here - all us pinko commie, elitist, latte drinking (I don't drink coffee ha ha) volvo drivers you know... We just bought a new toyota yaris for $15,000 with all the amenities - out the door and the mileage is incredible without even being a hybrid ( it does kind of look like a small prius or something though). It is a great little car and they have been available in europe for a while already so it has a great reputation. toyotas are simply excellent cars. The yaris gets 38 to 42 mis per gallon. We drove all the way from Mill Valley CA to L.A. a couple of months ago on one tank of gas.
