Re: O/T Diabetes

I was on Metformin 850mg 3x day, glyburide 2x a day for diabetes. I had been on Actos as well, but it made me gain weight. I also was on meds for Depression and high blood pressure.

The standard diabetic diet, one protein, one starch, one vegetable, one milk, just did not work for me. I just could not keep my blood Sugar under control with that diet.

Cravings: One week on a strict Atkins type diet will eliminate nearly all cravings. It is terrible for the first few days. I have a theory that diabetes is a carbohydrate addiction, especially to grains. I am sure there is some alteration in metabolizing them as well, because I noted that not all feeling in the abdomen one would interpret as hunger is really hunger. When I take a ton of supplements the movement in my stomach feels like hunger. I get that same accompaniment with cravings. I am like an alcoholic with carbohydrates - I can have maybe one drink, but the second sends me into a binge, with cravings, cravings, cravings.

My blood Sugar in the mornings is still a little high, 140-160, but my 2 hour PP is always about 120-140. I could take Metformin for the morning blood sugars, but choose not to. I have been on Iodine since April 15. After a few weeks I noticed a dimension of fibromyalgia pain. Then after a while, some increase in energy and I could work a little longer. After three months, I ran out of my antidepressants and didn't go crazy as I would have before. The salt made my blood pressure normal, I think, and the BP meds and diabetic meds were next to go. The first month I was scared and prepared to take up the meds if I needed to and two separate days I did take the glyburide. I had a talk with myself, and said I would just have to tighten my diet.

Protein and vegetables are what work for me. In the last few months, I have added watermelon, mango, papaya and tamarind. But I have to cut those way back because that is not working for me, not because I have noticed an increase in blood sugar, although I confess not to taking it as often as before, but because my legs are holding water, not every day, but I am connecting it to heavy fruit consumption.

It is easy to stick to this diet because I can have a lot of food. I let myself have unlimited salads with meat, chicken or fish in them for dinner, as much as I want. I always buy celery, carrots and tomatoes to make a vegetable soup. I also buy cilantro or parsley and make sure I use them right away in something. I cook everything fresh, and freeze what I don't eat. I eat only fish and tomatoes from a can, and nothing frozen that I haven't cooked myself, and nothing from a box. I go to the store every 3-4 days, so I won't have tons of food around to tempt me, and if I overdo on salad or vegetable soup, so what?

I take a drink of lemon, Sea Salt and cayenne in the morning. I am doing high doses of iodine, 50 drops per day now, but when I got off my meds, I was taking less. I can't remember exactly, I think 16 drops twice a day. My body was extremely toxic and I haven't gotten to the real detox yet. You may need much less iodine.

I started the diet years ago with Herbalite products, and lost weight. No real weight loss with Iodine yet, but all in God's good time. Hope this helps.
