Re: Where do you get tamrind, and how do you take it

Tamarind is a pod, which has seeds in it. The seeds are covered with fleshy fruit. The seeds are like flat marbles. I am sure there is some use for them, but I don't know of it. I have heard that tamarind is an ingredient in Worcestershire sauce - don't know if that is true or not.

I was introduced to tamarind by a friend from Central America. The Latins are big on tamarind drink, and it is quite laxative. If you can find the pods, buy a handful, shell them, and put 3-4 of the seeds with fleshy fruit into a half gallon of water. Let it sit a few days in the refrigerator. Shake it up and pour out a cup of the liquid into a small glass, about 12 ounces, and sweeten it with about 5 drops of stevia. Drink it! It is a sweet and sour taste, really addictive. You want to drink only a glass or two at most per day - it is very cleansing. Some people like it really diluted; some stronger. There is a box of Sweet Tamarind, which has bigger pods with more flesh over the seeds. You can peel those and just eat them. They do not seem to be as laxative. There is fiber over the seeds; I eat that too. There is a webbing that holds the pods together; I do not eat that.

In the ethnic Asian stores, they often have tamarind paste, or little balls of tamarind. Usually these are seasoned with both salt and Sugar or just salt. I occasionally use them in a drink made as above as well. The salt gives it a different taste, and I prefer the kind made from fresh pods.

If you buy tamarind paste, you can google tamarind recipes and find out how to use it.

If you are not near a big city, where you can find it yourself, you can ask any Latin or Asian where they buy their tamarind. It will be cheaper than ordering it.

You can also order it online. Just google it.

Tamarind helps take fluoride out of the body. When you take it, take some calcium carbonate with it to bind the fluoride and help carry it out of the body. Fluoride has the tendency to enter other parts of the body if not promptly bound and taken out.
