Re: Question for Texasangel re: cholesterol
My mother is 78 and they wanted to put her on all that stuff too. She politely took the samples and put them and the prescription in a drawer. They may be in the trash by now.
I was listening to a medical radio show a couple of years ago by a Holistic Houston MD and he had on a guest - Shane Ellison. Shane was a chemist for one of the big pharmaceutical companies and he finally got fed up and quit. He's written a book that basically says that all this high cholesterol scare is a myth perpetrated by BIG PHARMA to sell more drugs. He said BIG PHARMA'S basic goal was to get every American household on statin drugs for high cholesterol and drugs for high blood pressure.

He also said red yeast rice is poison and to avoid it at all costs.

Dr. Hotze then chimed in and said that he would rather his cholesterol be 400 and that he'd never under any circumstances take any statins. I'm not a doctor so I'm just quoting what he said.
As far as myself, I still struggle with high blood pressure. I am 90-100
pounds overweight thanks to 10 years of prednisone and high blood pressure meds which cause weight gain big time. I'm diligently working to get this weight off and doing alternatives to wean myself off these BP meds (the prednisone is long gone). The side effects are incredible. On the other hand, I don't want to be stupid and have a stroke. There's the rub and because I've cut out wheat and
Sugar and am basically doing low carb, the weight is slowly going down.
So all that said, I haven't really been concerned with cholesterol, and at that time I had been eating healthier and more oatmeal. But what lowered it specifically is anybody's guess.
I became suspicious of my doctor's motives when I tried to explain how it went down 95 points without any drugs. All she wanted to know was how long had it been since I'd stopped taking Lipitor. I expected her to say something like, "Congratulations, whatever you're doing is working ... keep doing it." But she acted really nervous and said I had to take Zetia "a harmless little pill." It was at that exact moment that I realized I could not trust her and now I only go in for my mandatory checkups and otherwise if I think I'm dying and she's the only one that could save me. HA! I'm on disability for Lupus, live in a small town and am pretty well locked in to this type of health care. So I continue to look waaaaaaay outside the box.
I didn't directly answer your question about what other types of foods are good to lower cholesterol because (1) I don't know, and (2) I'm not afraid of high cholesterol anymore.
Maybe there are others in the curezone family that can be more helpful about the food part.
Good luck!
