Esophageal ulcers and Iodine

One of my uncles has had reflux disease for a long time. He is on Zantac for many years. Now he has Esophageal ulcers. Could he take iodine? I know he can apply topically, I would like to know if by taking it orally he will benefit. I am just afraid that ulcers may get burnt by iodine.
