We had a man in the community who was an avid gardener. The first moon melon I ever saw was one Johnnie G. grew and entered in the County Fair, of course it won first place. Johnnie died about ten years ago, I have often wondered what became of all his heirloom seeds he saved year after year. Its sad to see so many of our old-timers passing away and taking their prized seeds and great knowledge with them. Almost all of those from my Grandmother's generation had their old heirloom seeds. My grandmother's special seeds were called wild goose peas. I still have a few left. How I wish I had some of Hazel's bright orange tomatoes, they were so sweet and not at all acid; then there was Clifford's prize sweet potatoes that were the best I ever tasted. How I miss the old timers who were the children and grandchildren of the original pioneers in this part of the Ozarks. A great wealth was lost when they died. Its good to know there are still moon melons out there.
