Re: hair loss selenium mystery

that's a known effect of too much Se. Typically one won't get that far without first having extremely foul smelling gas, however, as the body tries to rid itself of excess Se by forming dimethyl selenide in the gut, as a means of ridding toxins. Few realize, that gas, while interpreted as a sign of indigestion, is actually the body's secondary way of ridding itself of toxins when other mechanisms are over-whelmed.

Hair follicles have three stages, 1) growth; 2) rest; 3) dormant. They're interconvertible too. I think it's likely that too much selenium causes an increase in the activity of 5-alpha reductase in the scalp by inhibiting proteins that themselves normally would inhibit the 5-alpha reductase, causing larger converison of testosterone to di-hydroxytestosterone, which makes the hair fall out. You probably have high testosterone levels presently, and if it were me I'd ingest some kuzu root extract and saw palmetto for a few days to counter it's effect. I'd also eat some raw strong onions and do some garlic to help in getting rid of the excess selenium. I would also drink extra water with the foregoing, and some heavily hoped beer, or relatively large amounts of hops extract. Carlsberg Danish beer (not elephant malt liquor) or Becks are well-hopped. I would expect a bitter English Ale to also be potentially of benefit.
