It's the wealthy, preying on the ignorant, same as it ever was.
It effectively culls the herd. We're just more creative than the lesser beasts in the way ours are culled out.
In the case of the gazelle, it might be the slowest runner , or one who strays from the pack, that gets eaten.
Those genes are then out of the pool. The weak lions also die out. So, there is competiting equilibrium between the increase in quality of the lion stock, and the increase in quality of the gazelle stock.
Same for people, but the one side has evolved quicker than the other.
