My guess is that the older women are simply more Iodine deficient in general. There has also been a correlation with downs and hypothyroidism in a parent. With Down's syndrome there is a higher incidence of gluten intolerance as well. Supplementing mineral deficiencies have been shown to help lessen the effects of Downs (including the flat face). But regular allopathic medicine has not picked up on this and run with it. The work that has been done has been with pioneering parents. It was in one of the big name magazines (I.E. Time, etc.) about 15-20 years back. I met a woman a few months ago who has a 7 year old Downs child. One of the medical centers she took the child to told her it wasn't worth their time to treat the child.
