lack of iodine and down's syndrome, thoughts (

I was thinking about the fact that Iodine is supposed to be helpful to eliminate radiation. I remember having read that Down syndrome is significantly higher in populations that have suffered some form of radiation ( a study suggested that older women have higher chances to have Down children b/c they were more likely to have gone through more medical x-rays compared to younger women).
I was wondering whether a dramatic lack of Iodine resulting from radiation might have something to do with Down's syndrome, After all Down people actually look a lot similar to people who have goiter/cretinism.

Just a thought, naive maybe
