It can be candida. When candida has become well established, it can start spreading outside of your body, and the area by your vagina is where it will first start to grow after it has made the jump from inside your body. (Assuming you didn't get it from having sex with an infected person.)

If it is canidida, the fact that it is purplish brown shows that it is very mature and ready to spread even further, so it's very important that you have it checked out by a doctor before it really takes over.
