I did not use the heating pads when I wrapped my knees and would wrap the pack in plastic and sleep that way.

Of course you can use the heating pad if you can spare a few hours a day where you can keep your legs up.

I got to the point I could wrap and unwrap both of them in less than ten minutes from start to finish.
