Re: Jeff Crow - what is your opinion regarding salt
Salt in general is one of the six tastes; the other's being sweet, sour, pungent bitter and astringent. There are different types of salt with different applications i.e. mineral salts,
Sea Salt etc., but in general the salty taste makes the body hard and erect. It assists in the evacuation of bowels blocked by "wind" and clears clogged circulatory "channels". By applying warm salts in a cloth to the skin, perspiration is extracted from the body. It creates appetite in the body.
Taken in excess, the salty taste creates loss of hair, gray hair and wrinkles. In excess it reduces the energy of the body, produces a thrist imbalance (polydypsia or thirst illness), hives and leprosy ( in Tibetan, warts and leprosy are called tze).
Excess salt causes illness of the bile and blood.
The above are simply a few statements from Tibetan Medical texts regarding "salt".
There are others and the tastes in general are a big area of study when diagnosing and curing disease as well as establishing what type of medicine is needed. The different "tastes" also correspond to the different elements: earth water fire wind and space and the corresponding hollow and solid organs (gall bladder, liver etc.)
