The inland and coastal Japanese eat dried kelp. The average Japanese eats kelp five times a day in various forms.

They even eat kelp snack foods equivalent to our chips or popcorn. The coastal Japanese have even lower levels of certain cancers than the inland Japanese. I don't know whether this is because of the access to shellfish or not.
