Do I have to be bleeding to have My Mirena removed?

Hello people,
I'm new to this forum. But I finally feel validated in my problems. I have had my Mirena IUD in for a yr. Well I called my OB's office to make a appt to have the thing removed and they told me I had to be bleeding to have it out. But here is the problem I didn't have my period this month and have a feeling i'm not going to have another one. I was told that by a year of having this thing in I would probably stop having my period. I took 2 pregnancy tests just to be safe and both were negative. But the receptionist I spoke with was not very friendly and told me that if I was not bleeding I would have to call back and reschedule. I just want this thing out I have gained over 40 lbs since having it put in. I have tried to lose weight and I feel like i'm losing the battle. I have no energy and have become very very forgetful. My husband is the one who told me he thought it might be the IUD and I just shrugged it off for the the longest time. Finally about to weeks ago I started searching the web for ppl that have had side effects from Mirena and found this web site. I thought I was going crazy until I read about all the problems everyone has had. So has anyone had there IUD taken out when they were not bleeding? I would really appreciate any feedback.
