Re: How to take?

Karina,

It's a VERY common misconception that Iodine can be harmful...so don't be too hard on your friend once you've researched and found the truth for yourself. ...that last statement "found the truth for yourself" is IMPERATIVE in the world of natural healing! EVERYbody has a opinion, but very FEW know anything more than what they've heard someone else tell them...and yep, the 'someone else that told them', heard it from someone else that told THEM. Remember that "telephone game' as a child, where the beginning message ended up totally different after a few people had heard it and passed it along??? You can DEPEND upon that being the case in the world of natural health....and ESPECIALLY on forums such as this.

There's some basics below (taken from an ealier post here:

//www.curezone.org/forums/fm.asp?i=846378#i

But the single most important (most enlightening, most educating, etc) piece of knowledge can be found here:
//www.curezone.org/ig/f.asp?f=1723

...and out of the four audio/radio programs, the absolute TOPS is the two hour audio with Dr. Stan/Dr. Flechas. You WILL learn more in that TWO HOURS of listening, than you will by researching/reading ONE HUNDRED HOURS! Don't feel bad if you can't find a 'two hour window'...just listen to it a few minutes at a time, every time you get a chance.

Iodine (as part of an overall detoxification and healthy food program) WILL decrease your fibroids (YAY!). It is almost impossible to ingest enough seaweed to equal the recommended 50mg/daily Iodine our bodies need to reach 'iodine suffiency'...in fact, it'd be close to a POUND of seaweed daily (IF we could get the good stuff from Japan, which we can't). Good kelp certainly wouldn't hurt, but it's not going to accomplish the level of healing I'm guessing you'd like to achieve.

The rest of the information is below; all the studies you'll be reading/hearing are based on Iodine in the form of Lugol's Solution or Iodoral tablets (Iodoral tablets are made from Lugol's). Just do a bit of searching on this forum and you'll find several posts on various sources & locations to buy.

'Hope this helps you out a LOT!

Unyquity

As you can see below, the average/non-obese person reaches 'iodine sufficiency' taking 50 mg of Lugol's Solution/Iodoral tablets, in one-three months. You can start dosing at however many milligrams you prefer. The doctors that most of us are basic our protocol upon, started most of their patients at 50 mg daily, but many times they adjusted the dosages later on (for various reasons). Many people on CZ start at FAR less than the 50 mgs. Btw, one drop of Lugol's equals approximately 6.25 mg.

As you can also see below, iodine WILL push a LOT of poisons from the tissues in your body; one that causes a LOT of symptoms is bromine/bromide. There are a lot of various symptoms from bromide poisoning that include: frontal-lobe headache, skin rashes/acne, and all varieties of 'brain fog' & lethargy. One can assist the body to remove bromine from the blood by adding salt/saltwater to your protocol (more below).

Vitamin C is also important, to help with the absorbtion of iodine (if you happen to be one of the ones that don't don't absorb iodine fully), and for helping as an anti-oxidant to support your body & assist in removing toxins. (more below)

Magnesium is also a consideration, as the doctor's that have done the most study/research and treatment of patients, say: "...Best results were achieved when orthoiodosupplementation was combined with a complete nutritional program emphasizing magnesium instead of calcium." I haven't been able to find exactly what this means or why, but I have included a bit more information below on magnesium.

Here's is a basic list of these supplements (note: this IS a compilation from BreastCancerChoice taken from other research):

http://iodine4health.com/special/nutrients/protocol.htm

Abraham, et al, have recommended specific nutrients in various articles and communications. BreastCancerChoices has reviewed this literature and compiled the following suggested protocol.

Iodine Supplementation Protocol with Companion Nutrients
(my addition - the one thing that is missing from this list is Omega-Three Fatty Acid/Oil, and I feel this is a HUGE one to be absent, but I haven't yet found enough details to offer. EVERYbody needs Omega Three -fish oil-, whether supplementing with Iodine or not).

Vitamin C - 3,000 mg per day (more may be necessary to detox bromide)
*
300-600 mg magnesium oxide or comparable magnesium supplement
*
200 mcg selenium
*
625 mg inositol hexaniacinate twice a day (some may not tolerate niacin)
*
A comprehensive vitamin and nutrition program

Regarding the Selenium & Niacin. I have not completed my information gathering on these, so I don't have any information 'at the ready' to offer, but (grin) PLEASE feel free to do your own research and decide whether or not you find them necessary :) Regarding Selenium, start searching the posts by Wombat, she knows ALL about the Selenium factor. As for me, I just munch a few Brazil Nuts daily for my Selenium, but many people feel the need for supplementation above that.

And all THAT is, at least the basics, of what you want to know. I feel it is IMPERATIVE that you listen to at least one of the audio programs found here (toward the top of the entire page:

http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chris/2007/01/31/consequences_of_iodine_defic...

...and I HIGHLY recommend it be this one: Dr. Jorge Flechas - Iodine - 01-05-07 (2hrs)

Also, the entire page (above) is FULL of good information.

Healthy Blessings,

Unyquity

The following is just the Summary

The Concept of Orthoiodosupplementation and Its Clinical Implications

by Guy E. Abraham, MD

Summary of Findings

Based on the above review of the literature and this author's clinical research studies,8-12 the concept of orthoiodosupplementation can be summarized as follows:

1) The nutrient iodine is essential for every cell of the human body requiring peripheral concentrations of inorganic Iodide ranging
from 10-6M to 10-5M.

2) In non-obese subjects, these concentrations can be achieved with daily intake of 12.5-50 mg elemental iodine.

3) The thyroid gland is the most efficient organ of the human body, capable of concentrating Iodide by two orders of magnitude to reach 10-6M Iodide required for the synthesis of thyroid hormones when peripheral levels of inorganic iodide are in the 10-8M range.

4) Goiter and cretinism are evidence of extremely severe iodine deficiency because the smallest intake of iodine would prevent these conditions, (i.e., 0.05 mg/day) is 1,000 times less than the optimal intake of 50 mg elemental iodine.

5) The thyroid gland has a protective mechanism, limiting the uptake of peripheral iodide to a maximum of 0.6 mg/day when 50
mg or more elemental iodine are ingested. This amount, therefore, would serve as a preventative measure against radioactive
fallout.

6) An intake of 50 mg elemental iodine/day would achieve peripheral concentration of iodide at 10-5M, which is the
concentration of iodide markedly enhancing the singlet triplet radiationless transition. This effect would decrease DNA damage with an anticarcinogenic effect.9, 11

7) Orthoiodosupplementation results in detoxification of the body from the toxic metals, aluminum, cadmium, lead, and mercury.

8) Orthoiodosupplementation increases urinary excretion of fluoride and bromide, decreasing the goitrogenic effects of these halides.

9) Most patients on a daily intake ranging from 12.5-50 mg elemental iodine reported higher energy levels and greater mental
clarity with 50 mg (four tablets Iodoral®) daily. The amount of iodine used in patients with fibrocystic disease of the breast by
Ghent, et al,7 that is 0.1 mg/kg BW/day, is 10 times below the optimal daily intake of 50 mg. In our experience, patients with
this clinical condition responded faster and more completely when ingesting 50 mg iodine/iodide/day.

10) Orthoiodosupplementation may be the safest, simplest, most effective, and least expensive way to solve the health-care
crisis crippling our nation.

11) For best results, orthoiodosupplementation should be part of a complete nutritional program, emphasizing magnesium
instead of calcium.

12) The iodine/iodide loading test and serum inorganic iodide levels are reliable means of assessing whole body sufficiency for
elemental iodine and also for quantifying the bioavailability of the forms of iodine ingested.

About the salt:

Salt Water (or salt immediately followed by water)

10 grams of natural salt mixed in water and taken orally (or salt on the tongue, immediately followed by water) will help lessen the symptoms caused by the release of bromine/ide, AND help push the poisons into the kidneys and out of the body via urine. The most commonly referred to 'recipe' on CZ (at this time) is found here:

http://www.breastcancerchoices.org/iprotocol.html

..and pasted below.

Just how much bromine/bromine (a true poison & carcinogen) might we be releasing and have free-floating throughout our bloodstream (the iodine pushes it out of 'storage' and into the bloodstream to be removed/neutralized by the kidneys/liver and possibly the skin). It is possible to have a "horse pill's worth"...up to 700 MG were of bromine/ide found in the the urine of patients undergoing iodine supplementation (see below). Methinks this therapy is VERY important whether one can 'feel' the symptoms of bromine/ide being released, or not.

Btw, salt is sodium chloride; it is mentioned that it's the chloride that helps displace/remove the bromine. There are several mentions of utilizing potassium chloride and/or magnesium chloride for the basic purpose (both on CZ and throughout the research...but I don't have links to any of them).

"Is there a practical and simple way to lower the body's burden of fluoride and bromide? It has been known for sometime now that bromide competes with chloride in the extracellular space and that the total molar concentration of bromide plus chloride remains constant. (8) This concept has been used to decrease extracellular bromide levels by saline loading. However, the presence of bromide in the thyroid gland (9) and the central nervous system (10) suggests that there is another intracellular "pool" of bromide, not responding to chloride. In the thyroid gland, bromide competes with iodide for uptake, oxydation and organification.

"Therefore, increasing iodide intake should lower bromide levels in the thyroid, preventing and reversing its thyrotoxic and goitrogenic effects. The same applies to fluoride. Galletti and Joyet (12) evaluated the effect of 5-10 mg fluoride on thyroid functions in hyperthyroid patients. Although fluoride inhibited the iodide-concentrating mechanism of the thyroid, fluoride did not accumulate in the thyroid. Based on their radioactive tracer studies, they concluded "Fluorine does not impair the capacity of the gland to synthesize thyroid hormones when there is an abundance of iodide in the blood." Therefore, fluoride toxicity depends on iodide supply."

"Following supplementation with the iodine/iodide preparation, there was a progressive increase in the excretion of fluoride and bromide. With 3 tablets, the 24h excretion of fluoride was 17.5 times baseline level; and for bromide, 18 times baseline level. These high levels persisted even after one month of supplementation at 3 tablets/day, being 15 times baseline level for fluoride, and 16 times for bromide. After one month, the estimated total amount of halide excreted was 24 mg fluoride and 8700mg bromide. It is unlikely that such large amounts of halides came from the thyroid gland. It would seem that the whole body is being detoxified. Orthoiodosupplementation could be used under medical supervision to detoxify the body from unwanted halides in a manner similar to the use of EDTA for the detoxification of heavy metals.

"Salt can facilitate the detoxification of various harmful chemicals from the body. A low-salt diet will lessen the body's ability to detoxify many chemicals. In addition, a low-salt diet will exacerbate the toxicity of the element bromine."

"Salt contains approximately 40% to 50% chloride. Chloride and bromine compete for reabsorption in the kidneys. When there is a decreased amount of chloride in the body (which is common in low-salt diets), less bromine will be excreted from the kidneys resulting in elevated bromine levels. Increasing the amount of chloride in the diet will allow the kidneys to release more bromine into the urine for excretion."

"When bromine is absorbed in the body, it tends to stay in the body for long periods of time. The "half-life" of a substance is referred to as the amount of time that 50% of the substance remains in the body after it has been absorbed into the body. A longer half-life would mean the substance would stay in the body for a longer time, versus a shorter half-life."

"Studies show that one-half the dose of bromine is still in the human body 12 days after ingestion. Therefore, the half-life of bromine is referred to as 12 days. In animals (rats), the half-life of bromine is 3 days. When rats are subjected to a low salt diet, the half-life of bromine is prolonged to 25 days--an 833% increase. This means that a toxic substance--bromine--stays in the body for a longer period of time in a low-salt environment.... A low-salt diet prolongs the elimination of bromine drastically. Only with adequate chloride levels, can the body eliminate bromine in any significant amounts. Salt is the body's major source of chloride."

"Bromine will bind in the body wherever iodine is bound.... When bromine binds to the thyroid gland, it is not only a toxic element but it can cause an iodine deficiency to occur. In conditions of iodine deficiency, bromine becomes more toxic."

Salt Loading Protocol for Possible Bromide Side Effects

Orthoiodosupplementation induced and increased mobilization of bromine from
storage sites, with increased urinary excretion of bromide. --Guy Abraham, MD

Certain iodine-literate doctors feel the bromide excreted by iodine therapy can
be eliminated more efficiently by the chloride present in mineral-rich Celtic
salt. The salt is added to water in a specific way. Eating salty food is not
effective. table salt is only used in an emergency.

Some members of the Amazon discussion group have found the Salt Loading
Protocol devised by Dr. William Shevin (and presented at the February '07 Iodine
Conference) to be effective in eliminating the side effects such as bromide
sedation, acne, brain fog, brassy taste, mouth sores, frontal headache or other
symptoms which occur in a small percentage of patients.

* 1/4 teaspoon salt in 1/2 cup warm water followed with 12-16 oz pure water.

* Repeat in 30-45 minutes if needed. May repeat again until copious urination
begins.

* Observe subjective response (usually within several hours).

No consensus exists on how important the salt loading may be to an iodine
therapy strategy if the patient does not have adverse symptoms.

About the Vitamin C:

3000 mg Vitamin C (or thereabouts) taken an hour or two before the iodine, has been researched and proven to ensure that the iodine taken is being absorbed into the body. The doctors that have done the most research & testing (Abraham, Browstein, Fletchas, et al) had a FEW patients (out of thousands) that were taking iodine, but their urine tests clearly showed they were urinating out the same amount as they took in. This was changed with the addition of Vitamin C. So many people are taking it to be sure they are absorbing the iodine (which may or not be necessary at all). Here's where you can learn more about that aspect:
Evidence that the administration of Vitamin C improves a defective cellular transport mechanism for iodine: A case report.

http://iodine4health.com/special/nutrients/vitamins/abraham_vitc.htm

Another aspect of Vitamin C: is that it's a MAJOR anti-oxidant. One of the 'side effects' of supplementing with iodine is that a LOT of toxins are going to be released. Those toxins include bromine/ide, fluorine/ide, chorine/ide, mercury, cadmium, lead, and aluminum (I'm sure there's more). When your body gets 'hit' with a large amount of poison, it's VERY wise to utilize Vitamin C/anti-oxidant to assist your body in handling the large amount/array of toxins.

Iodine has been shown to be a potent antioxidant even more effective than Vitamin E, phosphatidyl choline, and Vitamin C. As with Vitamin C, iodine can function as both an antioxidant as well as an oxidant in the body. This dual effect makes it a strong anticancer agent. One of the best signs of health in the body is a balance between antioxidants and oxidants. Items like iodine and Vitamin C can help maintain that balance, and therefore, are some of the most powerful anti-cancer agents known."

“Iodine can cause a detoxification reaction in the body by facilitating the body’s release of the toxic halides fluoride and bromide. If the body’s detoxification pathways are overloaded when the toxic halides are being released, a detoxification reaction can be triggered. A detoxification reaction can take the form of fatigue, muscle aches, fever, diarrhea, and brain fog, skin rashes, etc.”

“If one is found to be iodine deficient, it is best to correct other nutrient imbalances before instituting iodine supplementation. Proper dosing of magnesium, Vitamin C and minerals will maximize the response to iodine

Magnesium

Most people are deficient in magnesium (most people are deficient in many vital substances...especially those just entering the world of holistic health that have poor diets and/or don't supplement daily with some type of 'superfood' to get the nutrition one can no longer get from natural foods). Magnesium with iodine should reverse auto-immune thyroid disorders. I can find no reason why supplementing with magnesium should be necessary simply because one is taking iodine. However, this quote from Dr. Abraham, "Similar observations were reported by other physicians using this program. Best results were achieved when orthoiodosupplementation was combined with a complete nutritional program emphasizing magnesium instead of calcium." indicates that one should emphasize magnesium over calcium when supplementing iodine.

Epsom Salt
Epsom Salt Industry Council

"Magnesium - the key component of Epsom Salt -- performs more functions in more systems of the human body than virtually any other mineral, including regulating the activity of more than 325 enzymes."

"Medical research also indicates that magnesium may:

*

Increase the effectiveness of insulin, helping to lower the risk or severity of diabetes.
*

Reduce inflammation and relieves pain, making it a beneficial in the treatment of sore muscles, bronchial asthma, migraine headaches and fibromyalgia.

"Although magnesium can be absorbed through the digestive tract, many foods, drugs and medical conditions can interfere with the effectiveness of this deliver method. Therefore, soaking in an Epsom Salt bath is one of the most effective means of making the magnesium your body needs readily available."

Iodine is related to numerous other nutrients, including selenium, iron, magnesium, vitamins, and proteins. When supplementing with iodine, pay attention to these nutrients, too.
----

http://iodine4health.com/special/nutrients/magnesium/abraham_magnesium.htm

"Magnesium deficiency, which is prevalent in the US population, results in increased levels of cytosolic free calcium. Intracellular free calcium levels above the normal range are cytotoxic causing calcification of mitochondria and cell death. The cell membrane possesses an ATP-dependant calcium pump that keeps intracellular levels of free ionized calcium within narrow limits. This calcium pump is magnesium-dependent for normal function. Magnesium deficiency results in a defective calcium pump and intracellular accumulation of ionized calcium. Inadequate iodine/iodide intake below orthoiodosupplementation results in decreased levels of delta-iodo-lactone.

"Combined magnesium and iodine/iodide deficiency based on the concept of orthoiodosupplementation are the basic factors involved in the oxidative damage caused by excess H2O2 (Hydrogen-Peroxid) and reactive oxygen species.

"If this proposed mechanism is valid, orthoiodosupplementation, combined with magnesium intake between 800-1,200 mg/day, a daily amount this author recommended 21 years ago for magnesium sufficiency, should reverse autoimmune thyroiditis. This nutritional approach is also effective in Graves' autoimmune thyroiditis as previously discussed."
