I've read in some of the messages that folks will actually scrape the tartar off, themselves. A toothpick isn't rigid enough and will splinter and, possibly, leave wee bits of wooden splinters to gouge your gums. A small "scaling" tool can be purchased at any pharmacy in the toothpaste ailse. So, have at it and post your progress!
