mercury tattoos are put into the gum to prevent a cavity from going under the gumline toward the roots and rotting the tooth. it can spread out a bit. you won't get a tattoo from a mercury filling in a tooth, generally, unless it is during dental work (drilling of the mercury). but, when mercury is removed and there is a lot of it in your mouth (generally from drilling), it can accumulate in gum tissue and appear as a tattoo. to avoid the latter, go to a biologic dentist for removal.
