here's a pithy post from that Susun Weed forum linked to
*************************************************************************************
Susun sent leaves of comfrey to any number of labs for analysis and there are ABSOLUTELY NO pyrollizidine alkaloids in mature Comfrey leaves. None. Nada. Period.
The research done that 'proved' that lab rats developed PRE-CANCEROUS CHANGES in their livers was done with an unbelievably high concentration of SYNTHESIZED ALKALOIDS!
I TOTALLY agree that capsules might be setting off alarms, as herbs are simply not meant to be taken as capsules, bypassing a good deal of the digestive system and leaping too quickly into the blood stream.
I simply cannot put any store by 'reports' that someone drank such and such an amount of comfrey (tea? full infusion?) for such and such an amount of time and developed liver problems, and THEREFORE..... And what ELSE were they doing? Perhaps taking PILES of vitamins? (THAT will TRASH your liver)
I just totally agree with Susun on this one. A water preparation of mature comfrey leaves is FOOD. The ROOT I would use more cautiously. An infused oil of the leaves I would use if you want really QUICK healing, and I would also exercise caution on a very deep, infected cut. I agree with that one. A few swishings of comfrey infusion healed up the wound from a tooth being removed in absolute RECORD TIME for me recently.
Make me hit my broken record again[)].....when in doubt, Self-Test*. Ask YOUR body if it can USE this, don't let anyone else's generalizations kick up a fear reaction. SOME of you will test 'no thanks' for Comfrey. Why? Who knows. I get persistent NOs on Nettles. Nettles are GOOD for you. We all KNOW that (but for me, not so much!)
A lot of the Wise Woman Way honors the individuality of each of us. We need not to lose sight of that.
