I've suffered from GERD on and off for a long time. The first sign of symptoms was when I had H. pylori. I didn't know about this condition or I would have asked to be tested for it. Amazingly it took my doctor months to actually test me, which at first is a simple bood test. I had the the treatment and then was prescribed antacids for years until I started to look into other ways of dealing with the condition. I have done everything but the most effective for me is juiced root ginger, first thing in the morning. I take it neat, followed by some apple juice. Some people cannot tolerate it, but I found it easier to take each day. It's inexpensive and is an old remedy for this condition and also H. hernia.
