Re: 11 year old Rottie with bone cancer...spread to stomach?

Hello LakeLight,

I wish I could offer more hope but we are
dealing with a similar situation and yesterday
I spoke about it with my trustful vet and she
was very kind and explained in great detail
that by the time a dog is diagnosed with cancer
much of the immune system has been compromised
and that the time is very limited. It was
shocking for me to hear the time range but since
I wanted her to be truthful, she was. She also
said that it is not the cancer that kills so
much as the effect of the compromised immune
system. The radiation and the steroids add a
little more time but are not successful generally
in reversing the process.

This is my second dog I have lost to cancer.
The first, a beloved therapy dog, lived far
beyond what a dog her breed usually does and
we did the steroids and other methods including
prayer to allow her to stay long enough for us
to be ready to say goodbye. By the time we made
the decision to allow the vet to inject her, she
was suffering through the night such that we were
more than ready to alleviate her suffering.

Our pet now who has also reached way beyond his
prime will get to where he cannot eat and will
have trouble breathing. He could pass anytime.
We will love him as well until our love allows
us to let him go to ensure that he is not suffering.

The symptoms you describe are much as what my
own vet told me to expect. I was grateful for
her honesty since it helps me not waste time on
wishing it were different and instead to focus
on the joy and companionship our pet brought to
our lives. Each walk, each gesture of love on his
part holds a special place in our heart as we
slowly allow his dance with life to come to a
standstill.

My prayers go out to you and your beloved Sheeba.
I hope you are not hurt by my honesty but time
is too short to give you the hope you wish I
could offer.

many blessings & prayers,
Zoe
