Your problem could be the grounding straps. The straps that I have seen advertised require them to be soaked in water for them to be effective.
Did you see or feel a difference from using the copper pipes and the wet paper towels?
I know the method is some times messy and inconvenient, but it is necessary for most people.
I use some stick on "Tens Pads". They cost a bit more then the copper pipes but they seem to work for me. My hands are free to read or compute and no water is involved. The pads can be reused many times. Just put a few drops of water on them and slightly rub to reactivate the adhesive.
