another option would be to try and clean out some of the carpet allergens... Get a steam cleaner, but don't use normal soap. get something like miracle 2 soap and neutralizer (which is supposed to help with chemicals).... scrub those carpets down really well and then open the windows and let them air out. now would be a good time before it gets cold. I think that's what I would do anyway.
