Treating cats' fleas.....please....

Could you direct me to info on treating flea infestation on cats?

We have two, and it seems like it's been YEARS since we had any flea problems. And I've changed alot in those years. 5 years ago I have just sprayed them with typcial store stuff, and then fogged the house. My husband is wondering what the big deal it--why I'm so upset. (the fleas don't bite him, and he's more than willing to chemically fog the house)

I'm not. I think it wouldn't be good for me. So for now, I just keep putting the cats back outside, and they just keep coming back in, and the problem isn't solved. Why they have them now when they haven't for years, who knows. Are the collars you buy in the store okay? Toxic? What do you suggest? And what about the sprays I would need to spray on the couch, rug, etc? I know, vacumn. I've been doing that. But I'd like to do no harm to the cats, but it is kind of disgusting to have FLEAS>
Yuck. And worse being bit!

All info/help appreciated.
Oh, they don't like baths. We live out in the country, and they go indoor/outdoor at will--and we never got into bathing them. But my husband has agreed to do whatever I ask if I'll quit complaining about it....so what do I do?

thanks,
pjangel
